As always, Sirius was as quick with his mind as Silas was on his feet.

"Good. Let's hope they find it quickly. I doubt I'll be able to stand upright much longer." Silas muttered as he followed his brother. Normally he would have tried to rush his brother, even with his bad leg, but he scarcely had the energy to walk himself now. What energy he had, he had to put into keeping the both of them safe, hacking at blobs, tentacles and possessed people alike, sometimes exchanging his knife for a jab with the lightning rod or a volley of needles. Once he even had to toss down everything, using a burst of flame from his hands on a rather tough possessed soldier.

Under other circumstances Silas would have been horrified at the damage he was doing and the deaths all round them, but now it seemed strangely irrelevant. There were so many bodies, some only barely recognisable, scattered around that he simply did not notice them anymore.

Sirius had, against what Silas had hoped, moved closer to the lizard in the center of the plaza. The closer they got, the more dangerous the tentacles would prove. There were even more of them this close to the monster, as they seemed to be growing out its head and spine even as they fought it. For a moment, fear grasped Silas' heart. What if it did not have a weak spot? What if it simply kept growing it devoured everything, the city included? The shaking ground did not promise much. Had it been quaking like that when the lizard had first appeared?

"Do what you have to do, but do it quick. I can only use one arm and there are a lot of things here out to kill us. I'll hold them off."

Silas doubted HE would be standing much longer? Sirius refrained from commenting as he walked closer to the enormous lizard. As he did so, several more survivors joined them, realising that he was moving with a goal in mind and with dedication, despite his limp. Finally, he found a pile of rubble and clambered atop it, hoping it would make a significant difference in his range as he pulled one arrow from his vambrace. "Not worth the risk," he muttered, sticking this arrow between his teeth and getting a second one ready. He just wanted some margin, in case this first arrow missed.

He nocked it, aiming his bow up and waiting for a good moment. When the lizard swept its head down, he loosed the arrow and sent it flying. To his dismay, while he did get the range he had been hoping for, he missed his target dreadfully, the arrow harmlessly bouncing against the beast's forehead. Entirely his own fault, but to his horror, the beast had now focused its attention on them and a few tentacles reached out. And this on top of the slugs that were very busy swarming the men around him- he had to act fast, and he had to hit hard. "All or nothing, then," he said when he took the second arrow from his teeth and nocked it, aiming upwards and taking a deep breath.

He poured magic into the arrow, as much as he could, until it exuded darkness and made even him uncomfortable. The beast was sentient enough to react to pain. This arrow was his final gambit, if this didn't work, they would die. He squeezed one eye shut, then shook his head and reopened it to be sure of his aim. The lizard's head came closer... The left eye, Sirius decided.

With one of the two tentacles less than a foot away from him, Sirius fired his Shadow Arrow.

Everything seemed to slow to a halt with Sirius released the arrow.

    And then it hit.

The lizard recoiled in pain, its tentacles lashing out and twisting wildly, throwing everyone nearby off their feet, man and monster alike. The entire ground seemed to shake with its tantrum, bulging in places where its lower body seemed to try to break through. Silas wanted nothing more than to cover his ears at the sound the lizard was making, an inhuman howling of pain and frustration. Though its eye was not its weak spot, it did appear to be a sensitive one. But the lizard howling and twisting in pain was not the only thing to concern the remaining fighters...

As soon as the arrow had struck its target, the ground had started shaking more and more, until the very earth seemed to tilt, along with the sense of suddenly dropping several feet. Around the city, the shield seemed to shift and shimmer, the water around it bubbling. The city was sinking even faster than before now.

Though the ground tilted back to the way it was before, the shaking and unsteady feeling of sinking remained, worsened by the lizard trying to break through the ground.

"We have to find cover, Sirius!" Silas shouted, his voice a mere whisper amongst the noise. He made a move to run towards the buildings, the debris there would give them cover from the tentacles whipping around madly, and something to hold to should the ground tilt again, but he never made it.

With a deafening crack, the rest of the lizard broke through the pavement, not only rearing its hind legs, but also its tail. Or rather, its many tails. As long and numerous as the tentacles growing from its head had been, grew the tails from one larger tail, all ended in vicious mouths not unlike the ones found on the blobs, all filled with row upon row of shiny sharp teeth. The lizard let out another howl, though this one sounded more angry than anything else.

The brothers were faced with the sight of one still-working eye glaring at them, the multitude of tails slowly moving around behind the monster, ready to strike.

"Dear Mother Farore," Sirius muttered as he followed Silas to safety. He had anticipated something would happen, but not that it would be quite this extreme. To his horror, he saw several men flying, presumably launched by the tails that had appeared aboveground. Onox's distinct armour wasn't among them, but he feared the majority of their forces were now gone. Limping behind his brother, his mind started running again. "Okay," he said, "There's good news and there's bad news." He waited until he was certain he had Silas's attention; and that of the other men who had survived the lizard's unborrowing. "The good news is that that... thing... isn't as big as we had feared."

He turned to Silas. "Silas, when we encountered it at the edge of town, that was most likely one of its tails or tentacles dragging Nihil's body." He ignored the gasps of the men around him, focused on his explanation. "It didn't extend that far in and of itself. So that's good news." He ran his hands through his hair, frustrated. "Everything else is bad news, though... the terrain has become dangerous, and even if my theory about its weak spot being on its abdomen is correct, then there's no way we'll be able to reach it without cutting off all those tails. And they don't look friendly."

He held for a few seconds, then dropped his hands. "I'm empty. I... I have no plan. I'm sorry, everyone."

"D-don't say that! You always have a plan!" Silas felt panic rising in his chest. They were out of sight of the lizard for now, huddled behind what had once been a market stall, but it would not be long before it would find them. Sirius had always been the one with the plans, and hearing him say he had none was one of the most frightful things he had heard.

Out of sight, the lizard howled again, and Silas carefully stuck his head out from behind the stall. Something was moving around near its tails, though with the twisting mass it was hard to see what it was. Until one of the lizard's talls was abruptly hacked off. Twisting in pain, the monster reared itself on its hind legs, slashing as the air with its front legs. Silas' blood ran cold as he saw nothing on its stomach that indicated a weak spot. In fact, the skin seemed even less translucent than everywhere else on its body.

He leant back behind their cover, giving the men a grim look.

    "Nothing on its stomach. We're-"

Another loud howl from the lizard interrupted Silas. Daring to take another look at it, he noticed something was still bravely dodging the tails and hacking away at them. Something in a very familiar armour.

    "Onox! It's general Onox!"

Though he looked worse than Silas had ever seen the man, seeing him alive was a great relief. He watched the general dart away from the tails, stepping backwards to get away from the lizard, until he caught sight of the Sheikah. Even though he looked away for less than a second, the lizard managed to bowl him over with a tail, lashing out again to grab Onox. But the ground shook and tilted again, this time even more severe than it already had, sending several of the men sliding out of cover and the general just beyond the monster's grasp.

Silas was holding on for dear life, grabbing onto Sirius' arm with one hand and preventing them from sliding away with the other, fingers digging into the cracks between the stones.

"Sirius! We have to get to the general!"

Sirius only shook his head at his brother's disbelief. He so badly wanted to reassure him, to pull out an idea. But he simply had none left. The beast was near-impervious, with any attacks they launched at it only appearing to make it angrier. "The best we can do is use all Zoras available to us to evacuate as many people as we can," he began, hanging his head in defeat. "And then hope and pray it doesn't swim to the surface to wreak havoc there-"

The ground tilted, breaking Sirius out of his near-depressive stupor when Silas grabbed him. He returned the desperate grip with two hands, looking in the direction of the lizard. He, too, saw Onox's distinctive armour now, and seeing the general alive filled him with a spark of hope. It was joined by a second spark when he heard familiar barking and Rover appeared above the two brothers, covered in blood and gunk and quite tired, but happy to see his master. "...yes," Sirius said, clawing his way up to where Rover was. His leg may have been rotten, but his arms still worked. "Yes, we have to get to General Onox. He may know something... he's our last hope."

Finally, he made it to slightly less slanted ground, which he could stand on normally, and helped Silas get on it as well before petting Rover on the head and drawing his bow. Now having an easier goal in mind, he scanned the area once more and this time, he did find something. "Silas." He pointed at a few spots. "The ground is falling apart, but I think you can safely hop across the fissures there, there, and there." The terrain was honestly the biggest problem at the moment, since most of the monsters appeared to have fallen into the cracks in the ground and not crawled out yet. Still, a few possessed soldiers still roamed the lizard's side and the odd slug stuck to the ground.

"I can't run and jump at the moment," Sirius explained as he nocked the first arrow, "But now that I have a bow, I can cover your approach from behind. Bring Rover with you, too. I'll cover you from behind, so don't bother trying to fight the monsters!"

Silas looked at the cracks in the ground with a hint of doubt on his face. If he had been in peak condition, he would have easily been able to jump across them like an acrobat, but in his bruised and battered state he had some severe doubts about his abilities. Still, he had little choice, as Onox was currently their only hope. If the man did not have any clue to its weak spot, all hope would be lost.

"Right." The Sheikah took a deep breath. "Time to go. Come on boy!"

Rover barked at him, and lept after Silas when he took off. The tilted ground was deteriorating, making it ever harder to focus on jumping across the fissures and obstacles. Most of the mosters had disappeared into such fissures, though a few of them attempted to climb out. Those were quickly shot down by Sirius or mauled by Rover, allowing Silas to continue on to the general's side.

A scream to his right drew his attention. Silas' head snapped to the side to see where it had come from.

    'How did we miss one?!'

One of the lizard's tentacles had gotten hold of a mage, flinging them upwards before swallowing them with its huge maw. Almost at the same time water came crashing down on the plaza, stopped by a fraction of the shield that had once encompassed the entire city. Now it only protected the plaza, everything beyond it had been claimed by the water as well. If they were to lose one more mage... He could only hope that the remaining mages were safe in the barricaded town hall, and not hiding somewhere amongst the rubble.

Having made his way to the other side of the plaza, carefully avoiding climbing with his bad arm, Silas hopped down from the splintered remains of a tree, landing next to general Onox.

"Sir! Did your men find anything?"

    To his surprise, Onox nodded.

"What we've been fighting so far is not the real creature. The lizard-like body and tentacles, the tails, it's a ruse to draw attention away from its real form. My men went into the sewers to attack the tails, and they found-" They had to dive away for one of the tails homing in at them, Onox cleaving it off with his sword. "Amongst its tails grows something else, a thicker and darker tail, ended by a round maw. It's one of the things that have been possessing my men, that is its true form! That's why the lizard did not respond to our attacks, it is not what is keeping the thing alive, it's a mere limb. The original tail- or creature, I should say, it more closely guarded than any other part of it, but if we defeat it, we can end this threat."

Silas gaped at the general. Sirius was going to want to hear this.

"Come on!" Sirius shouted over his shoulder as he saw Silas and Rover reaching Onox. "We have to get there as well; quickly! Someone help me!" He slung the bow over his shoulder and began to limp towards the more stable parts of the plaza, followed by the soldiers who hooped across gaps ahead of him and helped him across, as well. If Sirius felt shame, he hid it well. A tentacle came towards them, hoping to grab multiple snacks in one go. A Shadow Ball quickly deterred it. A slug made it out of the cracks, only to be stomped by the greaves of one of his escorts.

Finally, Sirius made it to Silas and Onox, and was rapidly filled in on the situation. Immediately, his eyes lit up. This was the best information he had gotten all day. "This is wonderful news!" he said, hitting his hand with his fist. "The slugs themselves aren't very resilient- I was just theorising earlier that if not for their dangerous power, they would be a threat level about equal to Keese. That means that, if we can get to it, we can kill this thing and be done with it just as easily as a normal one- if not MORE easily because with this enormous auxiliary, it won't be able to leap!"

Of course, this would be easier said than done. There were still multiple tails waving about, snapping at anything that came within range, be it animate or inanimate. He turned back to Onox. "Sir, I must ask you an enormous favour. Do you remember where exactly the true body is?"

    "I do."
"Do you remember well enough, and are you well enough, to lead us there?"
    "I am."

"Very well, then." Drawing his bow once more, Sirius nodded. "In that case, I suggest we use all our remaining strength to brute force our way through the other tails until we can take out the brain. This requires no plan, only courage and power."

Onox ran out first, followed immediately by the blood-and-gunk-stained Rottweiler, a handful of men, and a duo of exhausted, but reinvigorated Sheikah. "This is the final stretch," The younger said to the elder, and then, more loudly, "This is it! For Hyrule!"

"FOR HYRULE!" the men agreed as one, as the first ones began to hack away at the first tail they came upon.

    "FOR THE KING!"

Silas ran after the others as well as he could, though in his current situation he was starting to look more and more like his brother, more limping than actual running. His muscles ached, protesting against more exertion, but willpower and the thought of finally putting an end to this drove him onwards. They were going to end this.

He used his good arm to hack and slash at everything that passed by him, mowing a way through the mass of twisting tails and tentacles. Around him, Onox and the other men fought for their lives, drenched blood and liquids oozing from the cut off tails. Anyone who would have seen them now would have thought them more devils than men.

As Silas finished hacking off another tail, Rover tackled one that had crept up behind him, pushing it to the ground and tearing off its mouth. Silas barely felt fear anymore, this was what he had been trained for his entire life. To be a weapon for those who could not wield one, to protect the kingdom against all threats. He was swept up in a trance, almost instinctively hacking at the twisting and turning masses around him.

It was still a long way to the central tail, but they had regained their fighting spirit in full.

Even Sirius fought like a wild animal, his aching leg only serving to spur him on as he cut through slugs and dodged out of the way of tail-mouths. One of them got him in the shoulder. No matter, he drove his sword into it and ripped the mouth from the rest of the tail, tossing it to the side and forgetting about it. This close to the monster, there were no possessed soldiers or civilians left. Only the slugs that kept falling from the beast's body and which were easily dispatched by the more tired men while the more vigorous ones pressed on cutting off tails.

This was what Sirius knew and was good at. A clear division of tasks, a clear goal, and a squad of fighters who knew what they were doing and were willing to die in order to achieve it. For a moment, the Sheikah felt his spirits sink as one of the tails snapped, engulfing the head and shoulders of one of the men and lifting him up to devour him whole. But he set it aside. They all knew this was a suicide mission. They all knew they would be lucky if anyone got out of it alive. But none of them cared- a suicide mission was the only way to put an end to all this.

Another tail came for Sirius, and he came to a halt, snapping the bow from his back and launching an arrow down what passed for its throat. It snapped its mouth shut in surprise, only to reel back when the Shadow Ball following it struck it in the jaw. Finally, a dozen needles punctuated it, putting it out of commission. Sirius ran on, forcing himself to speed up so he could pass the men in front of him and throw himself onto a tail that had had it in for General Onox. He dug his nails into the membrane to hold on, enchanted his sword with darkness and struck it into the tail. It trashed wildly, forcing Sirius to hold on with all his might before getting a chance to plunge the sword in again and ripping the mouth off the rest. He fell to the ground, pushed himself off and followed behind the rest again, just in time to see Onox and the frontguard take down another one.

The tails were getting more violent, but on the bright side, when Sirius looked up, he had the idea there were significantly less of them than before they had set out. They were thinning out... it couldn't be that much further, now.

They fought on, some to their bitter end. Though they managed to cut down countless tails, some of them were simply too quick for any of the fighters, or struck from unlucky angles. Silas pushed his emotions away and ignored the screams as the men were getting devoured by the mouths, focusing on his movements. Stab. Slash. Stab. A step to the side, followed by slashing in a wide arc.

As the tails thinned out, so did the number of soldiers with them. In the end, their number could be counted on one hand, Onox and the Sheikah included. Though the ones that had been killed or devoured had not died in vain.

They were now facing the central tail, a huge, bloated version of the blobs they had encountered before, only a few tails left to protect it. The thing opened its mouth, showing countless of razorsharp teeth, each as big as a man's hand. The smell that came from its maw made Silas retch, a sick stench of death and decay, rank water and sewage.

This would be the final battle here. And it would end with either that thing's death, or the one of the men facing it.

Sirius, with his limp, was last to reach the core of the monster. As he reached it, the remaining tails retracted and formed a defensive barrier around the central slug. They'd have to cut those away first, and then finally, finally destroy this creature. Only a few of their men were left; Onox, Silas, Sirius, and two or three of Onox's finest. The men made way when Sirius approached, having replaced his sword with his lightning rod just in case. "Get rid of the tails," he said. "I think it's the exact same as the other ones, from what I can see now. But in order to get to it, we have to remove the remaining tails."

As on cue, one of the tails lashed out at him, digging its rows of sharp teeth into his arm and making a jerking motion. Between his bad leg, his exhaustion, and the surprise, Sirius was pulled to the ground, but before the tail could drag him or do anything else, Rover pounced on it, holding it to the ground and barking at it loudly, as if telling it to let go of his master. When it didn't respond, he dug his teeth into the membrane just behind the teeth that had dug into Sirius's arm, ripping it clear off and dropping it on the ground. It stopped moving then, and the tail it had been attached to shrivelled and fell off, exposing a part of it.

A second tail lashed out, but Sirius was faster, shoving a Shadow Ball into its mouth rather than his own head. "Well," he said, "What are we all waiting for? Lady Farore to come down from the heavens and do it for us!?"

Silas knew what he had to do.

He finished hacking off the mouth that had been assailing him, ignoring the blood that splattered onto his face. His next path of action was clear to him. Onox was not going to be the one to kill the monster, his armour was too cumbersome to move swiftly, and the other dead men had proved how vital it was to be able to dodge. Sirius was out of commission, with his leg and his other wounds, he would never make it alive. Perhaps Silas would not survive it himself, but that did not matter. His brother had a class to look after, and an office to return to. Silas had been commanded to end this, not even asked to come back alive. If he would be a weapon, he was going to be one. And weapons did not think about surviving.

With a loud battlecry, gathering all his remaining force, he ran forward, straight past Sirius, past Rover, past Onox and his men. The slug clacked its teeth in anticipation, a single tail lashing out at Silas, just as expected. Right before the mouth closed on him, he stuck out his wounded arm, surpressing a cry when he felt the teeth sink into it and lift him off the floor. Everything came down to his, the next moment would decide whether he would live or die, whether they would all live or die. The tail lifted him up, ready to throw the Sheikah into the air and devour him. But it had not expected to feel the knife. Silas twisted around, hacking through the tail. In its death throes, the tail had swept him up even higher.

    And then he fell.

For a few moments all Silas could feel was the burning, crippling pain in his shoulder, though he was not even quite sure anymore if he really felt anything at all. Everything seemed to go so slow... He could see the slug beneath him, whipping its head around to focus on the other men, not noticing the one rapidly coming down on him. Until Silas landed, putting his entire weight behind his knife, stabbing the slug right behind its maw, tearing through the soft tissue deep into the monster.

A dark liquid, thick like blood spurted out, spraying everyone near. Silas was grabbing onto his knife so tightly his knuckles turned white and his nails drew blood on his hands, desperate to hold on to the creature that was now violently spasming under him. It shook and twitched, tried to twist around to shake off the Sheikah, but finally, after what had seemed hours to Silas but in fact had been mere seconds, the creature's gelatinous body started to dry, shrivelling up. The monster was dead.

Silas got off, teetering as he tried to take a small step towards the others.

"...I did it." He said shakily.

    Then he promptly fell over.

Whoooa. Silas risked everything in a final assault, but with spectacular results. The slug that had caused all of this was dead. Shrivelled to nothing more than a little dry skin, like a rubber band that had lost its elasticity. Sirius looked up as the rest of the lizard began to shrivel up as well, quickly decreasing in size until there was nothing left. With the enormous monster gone, the sinking feeling in his stomach lessened, and he knew Impa was now stably floating at a fixed point in the sea. Well... as stable as it had remained, after the battle that had just gone on. He reached forward, collecting the remains of the monster for study.

The survivors should be safe now, he figured, they could begin evacuation and maybe even figure out how to get the remnants of the city back up to the surface. But that didn't answer a question the Sheikah had had from the beginning, ever since he had first ran unto the slugs. What were they? Where had they come from? Were they mutations of ChuChu? Heavens forbid there were more of them. Had they resulted from the same phenomenon that had made Impa sink? And if yes... was it Ganon's handiwork? If it were, the king had to know that so he could make the appropriate changes to his security, both visible and invisible. He turned to look at Silas's limp form. He had to count on his brother to get the report to His Majesty.

But for now... "It's done," he muttered to himself as he looked up. Sun didn't filter through, but he did feel better now that he wasn't looking at a translucent lizard eating people. His leg gave in and he fell to the ground with the other men. Rover joined him, planting himself on the ground next to him. Sirius brought up a hand and petted him on the head, rubbing his head and nose. "It's done, boy. It's done."

After the monster had disappeared, an eerie silence spread across what was left of the city.

    Until it filled with laughter.

Silas was lying on the ground, his brother having dropped down next him, shaking with laughter. To the others, it must have looked and sounded like he had gone insane, the strain of his mission having finally snapped him. But the laughter quickly turned from mad to relieved, and ended in a sharp exhale of breath.

"I'm alive. ...I'm alive! We're still alive, Sirius."

It took a while for it to dawn on Silas that they were done. The monster was dead, and they had survived. Everything the city had thrown at them, they had survived. He could almost imagine the feeling of the sun on his face, even though they were still far below the water. Would there even be sun when they reached the coast? How many time had passed since they had travelled to the city? The Sheikah could not be certain.

All he knew was that he was exhausted, and eternally grateful that this mission was done. After he had filed his report, he was going to take a nice long break, perhaps he could even get Sirius to come along. He moved his good arm, the other one lying limply to his side, and clamped a hand on his brother's head, ruffling his hair.

"We did it, brother. They'll be proud of us."

    He yawned.

"And we... have earned our rest, for now."

    -THE END-
