Residence: Though her father owns a large plantation, Judith lives within a small abbey in Lon Lon Ranch. It has been redecorated to serve as a place of solemn worship for the goddess Nayru, and can hold a minor congregation. She is currently the only occupant.

Pet: Not applicable. While Judith is fond of domesticated animals, she feels it would be irreverent to care for one inside her church.

    Appearance:

Perhaps the most common observation people make upon seeing Judith for the first time is that despite her beginnings as a farmer’s daughter, she looks almost nothing like one, having a slim figure and soft, pale skin. She may be taller than a typical specimen of her gender, but her pencil-thin limbs and small facial features make her appear rather frail. Long, pigment green hair falls to just above her waist, enveloping her pointed ears almost entirely. One of the most unusual aspects of Judith’s appearance are her beady blue eyes, as the irises of her parents and brothers are all orange. Since blue is the sacred colour of Nayru, Judith firmly believes that this strange trait was a divine harbinger of her destiny to serve the Goddess of Wisdom.

Appropriately modest for a holy woman, Judith wears a simple set of long, white robes with flowing sleeves. These robes have a hood, but she typically doesn't use it, preferring to let her hair down. Large, dark blue triangles are embroidered across the entirety of the garment in various patterns, intended to represent the Triforce of Wisdom. A matching sash is wrapped around her waist, providing space for a couple of leather pouches and a slot for her staff. As if her worshipful nature and vestiary weren’t enough of an indicator of her religious affiliation, Judith also wears a copper amulet with a depiction of Nayru engraved upon it, as an “official” symbol of her priesthood.

Due to a combination of religious fervour and her rural roots, Judith is perpetually barefoot. She refuses to don shoes, boots, or even sandals no matter how treacherous the terrain around her becomes.

    Personality:

Swearing one’s life to the service of a deity is not something to be done lightly, and indeed Judith takes her vows very seriously. Much of her personality is defined by the tenets of her religious beliefs. As an agent of Nayru, Judith upholds the virtue of Wisdom above all others, placing a high value on intelligence, logic, and the desire to learn, while condemning the sins of willful ignorance and the deliberate destruction of knowledge, the latter being an especially abhorrent transgression in the eyes of the Goddess. Aware that allowing emotions to cloud one’s judgment is generally the antithesis of true wisdom, Judith strives to maintain a calm, stoic attitude in order to better tend to her duties, though her youth and inexperience cause her façade to crack more often than she might like. Still, her devotion to Nayru is unyielding, and she is determined to prove that any challenges to her faith will be met with defiance and overcome.

It is important to recognize that Judith does not dispute the existence or divinity of Din or Farore. She merely believes that Nayru’s power is greater than that of the other Goddesses, Her contributions to mortal life more significant, and thus She is infinitely more deserving of worship. “Power without purpose is pointless, and Courage without prudence is recklessness,” is one of Judith’s favourite sayings. Without Wisdom, she reasons, civilization would not even exist, let alone progress. Of course, Judith knows that society overall prefers to venerate the three Goddesses equally, and she is perfectly willing to accept that, even if she personally disagrees, so long as Nayru is afforded the proper respect.

Outside of matters concerning her religion, Judith is surprisingly shy and meek. Having graduated to a motherly role early in life, she has developed into a compassionate, caring woman who works tirelessly to ease the pain of the suffering. Though she will not throw away her life needlessly, she will gladly lay her life on the line to save others. Obviously, this has helped her cope with the rigours of the more conventional tasks associated with being a priestess.

One of Judith’s biggest fears is that she might one day succumb to greed and avarice. While it is necessary for her to rely on donations to pay for the upkeep of her church as well as food, she sometimes wonders if the services she renders truly merit any material reward. She is likely overreacting, but nonetheless she tries to be very careful about how she spends rupees earned in such a manner, avoiding personal luxuries like the plague.

    Backstory:

The eldest child and only daughter of a plantation owner from Lon Lon Ranch, Judith Vilcaron’s first half-decade of life was pleasant, with loving parents, an adorable baby brother, and a comfortable home. When her mother became pregnant with Judith’s second brother, the family rejoiced, delighted that they seemed to be flourishing. Their joy proved premature, however, as Judith’s mother died shortly after giving birth. This complete reversal of the Vilcaron family’s fortune shocked many, and it bore evil tidings for the years yet to come…

Judith had no choice but to fill the void her mother had left behind. The fact that she was just a little girl, a mere five years old at the time, was irrelevant. Her father’s grief interfered with his ability to manage his farm, and soon he was in dire financial straits. Barely aware of what was going on, the young Judith scurried about the household, trying to help her father with both chores and the raising of her brothers. Unfortunately, she had not been blessed with a hardy physique, unable to wield a plough with much skill. Eventually, she was relegated to more traditionally “feminine” tasks, such as washing clothes and reading bedtime stories to her siblings, once her brothers were old enough to work.

Although Judith did not live in crushing poverty, nor was her misery even remotely comparable to the Hylians refugees in the south who had been displaced by Ganon’s sudden invasion, the hard times her father had fallen on were a constant source of humiliation for her and her kin. Their clothes were a little rattier than most, they went a little hungrier, and their neighbors were noticeably wealthier. Friends were few and far between for the Vilcaron children, who were often made fun of by other kids. In the face of adversity, all Judith and her brothers could do was stick together.

When Judith was sixteen, salvation finally arrived in the guise of a traveling priestess at their doorstep. This priestess, dedicated to the sole worship of Nayru, had heard of the family’s plight, and took it upon herself to restore them to grace. Once the woman was admitted into the household, she pulled Judith’s father aside and spoke with him in private for several hours. When she finally re-emerged from the conference, she declared that soon the Vilcarons would be prosperous once more. Not wanting to poke her nose into her father’s business, Judith worked up the courage to ask the priestess if there was anything she could do to speed up the process. The mysterious woman smiled and told Judith to pray to the Goddess of Wisdom every day and honour Her through expanding her own mind.

And pray she did. Morning, noon, and night Judith prayed, never neglecting this daily ritual. Whatever free time she had she devoted to studying topics she had no knowledge of, to the chagrin of her brothers, who thought the priestess’ prediction was nothing but hogwash. Miraculously, however, things started to change. Judith’s father, once a grim, unmotivated man who found it a challenge to continue living, transformed into a savvy and ambitious landlord. He bought low, sold high, acquired more fields for bargain prices, and read the market like an open book, growing a surplus of crops to fit the demands of the season. It was as if he had been reborn.

Within two years, Judith’s father was one of the most influential men in Lon Lon, presiding over several large and profitable fields tilled by several farmhands. Coincidentally, around that time, the priestess who had visited Judith’s father returned to Lon Lon with a few other clerics from her order. Convinced that Nayru had had a hand in the revival of her family, Judith rushed out to meet them when word reached her of their presence, throwing herself at their feet and begging to join them. Intrigued by her piety, the priestesses offered her the chance to accompany them on a pilgrimage across Northern Hyrule as an “initiation rite” of sorts. Overjoyed, Judith quickly ran home to ask her father for permission. Thankfully, he consented, believing that every good deed should be repaid. What better way was there to express his gratitude to the Priestesses of Nayru than by gifting them with his own flesh and blood?

Once their business in Lon Lon had concluded, the Priestesses of Nayru set out, the eighteen-year-old Judith in tow. Traveling the breadth of Northern Hyrule, Judith saw and learned much. Moreover, the clerics taught her the art of magic, and she found she had great talent for it, quickly mastering a few basic spells. Her faith only grew in strength as she spent time at various holy shrines scattered around the land and in the company of the kind, wise priestesses. Soon she could think of little else but how best to serve Nayru. For two years Judith journeyed with the priestesses, occasionally sending letters to her father so he would not worry, and by the time she finally came home, her resolve to become a Priestess of Nayru was unshakable. On the eve of their parting, the priestesses gave her a set of the trademark robes of their order, marking her as one of them. Tearfully swearing her vows right then and there, Judith promised her new sisters that she would erect a temple to their Order in Lon Lon, so that they would always have a safe haven. They replied that she would do them proud, and then they were gone.

Judith’s father, now rich beyond his wildest dreams, proposed ordering the construction of a grand cathedral to assist his daughter in her goals, but Judith refused, believing it would be more meaningful to accomplish them by herself. She eventually acquired a small, dilapidated church that had fallen into disrepair, using funds earned from odd jobs around town. A year passed as she spruced the place up and added her own furnishings. Finally, once the refurbishing was complete, Judith turned her eyes outward. Establishing herself had been easy, compared to her next task. There was a whole world in front of her, filled with people who needed Nayru’s enlightenment.

She would be the one to deliver it unto them.

Update upon promotion to Regular: Additional Courage. Being a priestess demands certain leadership skills, and swift feet can only help Nayru's cause. Therefore, Judith has redoubled her efforts to better serve her Goddess.
