    The Ice Cave

    Starring:
Sandal, Moblin mercenary and outfitter (Devil-Steel)
    Lamont Liesmith, Hylian sort-of-a-pirate (Squishy)

    Rewards TBD

Bonus rewards from Winter Event 2014/15: Blue Fire for Sandal, Snowshoe Ring for Lamont

    ---

The dark-haired Hylian tripped over a hidden rock, earning him a face full of cold, cold snow. He groaned, spitting out snow and wiping it off his face, eyes narrowing as he peered at the cliff ahead.

As always, treasure had brought him here. Or rather, the promise of treasure.

At the base of the cliff, though the snow and sleet wildly blowing around made it hard to spot, was a cave. A cave aptly named the "Ice Cave". Whoever had discovered it had a wild imagination. But Lamont was not here to judge the cave's name. He was here for something different, something more material. Over the years, there had been several expeditions to map the cave, though most, if not all, had perished in the cold here. And it was very likely they had left something valuable behind. All in all, it could be a good haul, Lamont thought to himself. The only downside was that it was so. Damn. Cold.

Even the thick fur coat, borrowed from his captain, did not seem to protect much. The sleet and snow had absolutely soaked it, and so Lamont was cold to the bone, shivering as he made his way over to the cave entrance, hoping that getting out of the wind would make him feel at least slightly warmer.

In the distance a large shadow could be seen approaching the cave. The clink of armor could barely be made out over the roar of the winds. It was at times like this that Sandal was glad that he had such thick fur hidden beneath his armor. He usually found himself to be too hot in his armor, but not today. The closer he got to the cave the easier it would be to make out the details of his armor.

The most curious part of the seven foot tall, heavily armored behemoths approach was that he wasn't sinking into the snow. No instead he walked across the top of the loose snow as if weighted nothing at all. It was at times like this that he was truly happy that he had bought that snowshoe ring. Indeed he had hated the struggle of areas like this one without it.

As he entered the cave he would look down at the shivering Hylian in front of him. He would remain quiet as he looked at the man in front of him. While some might find a seven foot tall, fully armored behemoth staring down at them intimidating not all did. After a moment the Moblin would finally speak. "You hire? While his voice was deep, it held some form of kindness to it. Perhaps coming from how simple the sentence had been, or maybe it was because it gave some small insight into how simple the man before him was. Of course he wasn't asking Lamont to hire him, but rather if he was the one that had hired him. Oh the problems of overly simple speech patterns.

Lamont slowly turned around, looking up at the giant that had appeared behind him, his soaked and miserable clothes suddenly forgotten. The thing was huge. It took him a moment to realise the armour was also capable of speaking, his mind too busy trying to decide wether to run for his life or beg for it.

Though it appeared that attacking Lamont was not on the thing's mind.

"W-what? Hire...?" He peered up at the armour's helmet, trying to see what was inside. Did the armour just ask him if he wanted to hire it? Or did someone hire it? Then, he looked around as the white landscape around them. He couldn't see anyone. He looked back up. "Are you waiting for someone? I mean, uh, I didn't hire anyone. Don't even have money..." The last part came out almost a whisper. As long as he did not know what was in the armour, he did not want to risk angering it.

"I'm just here to look for treasure... Like, uh, a treasure hunter. Not a thief or anything."

Lamont felt himself growing more and more nervous. It was already odd that he himself had ventured out to such a remote place, but now there was someone else as well, though he had no idea who or what that someone really was. But it might be impolite to ask.

When Lamont admitted the he hadn't hired anyone Sandal would turn around and look out on the vast, snowy landscape. "Wrong turn?" He would muse to himself. Had he gone the wrong way again? He must have gotten lost while thinking about what type of armor he was going to make with the pay from his job and gone the wrong way. The sudden realization that he had gone the wrong way and wouldn't have any money to make a new armor piece would cause the giant to sit down and lean against the wall. A horrible sound could be heard coming from within the armor, halfway between a howl and a moan. Whatever the creature in the armor was, it was clearly crying.

If Lamont were to try and console the mysterious creature he would find himself unable to do so, short of using something such as the Song of Healing or another magical way of calming him. After a few moments Sandal would abruptly stop crying and look towards Lamont once more. It was clear that something had popped into the beings head, but what did it mean for Lamont. "Treasure good. Sandal help." Standing back up slowly Sandal would look down towards Lamont as if waiting for him to accept the offer of help. It had dawned on the creature that if he couldn't be hired he could at least help and make some money that way. Of course if Lamont turned him down, chances are he'd start crying again.

The armour seemed slightly... eccentric, Lamont concluded, as he watched it break down in crying and get back up happy in less than five minutes. It seemed treasure was not only motivating to the Hylian.

"Uh, s-sure..." The dark haired man looked up at the armoured giant, still ever so slightly unnerved by its sheer size and odd behaviour. But it did not appear to be hostile, and even offered to help him. And if Lamont had to believe the stories about the cave, he would need all help he could get if he wanted to make it through alive.

"So your name's Sandal? Mine's Lamont. Nice to meet you...?" He held out his hand, though it looked more like a doll's hand than a human one compared to the other's.

"It's gonna be a tough trip, you sure you want to come along?"

When Lamont agreed to let him help Sandal would smile, though the Hylian wouldn't be able to see that underneath the helmet that the Moblin wore. Sandal just couldn't help, but smile. He was going to be able to get some treasure. He was happy. He only hoped that he found some armor, or some Rupees to buy some materials to make some armor. He truly was a simple creature with simple pleasures.

    "Lamont nice. Me help."

Reaching out to grasp Lamonts hand he would realize the size difference and didn't to risk hurting him with his armored hand. So instead he would place one finger in the palm of the Hylians hand with his thumb on the back of the hand. He was being careful not to inadvertently hurt his new friend.

Lamont couldn't help but grin at the armour. Whatever it was, and despite its intimidating appearance, deep down it was friendly. He did wonder exactly what was inside, but it felt rude to ask or pry. Perhaps it would reveal itself later, or perhaps it was just a very odd living suit of armour, if such a thing even existed.

"Well... I guess we just head in, then."

The Hylian's footsteps echoed in the empty cave. The entrance consisted of a long, dark tunnel, though the deeper the two went, the colder it seemed to become. Slowly but surely, frost started appearing on the walls, and eventually the floor was covered in patches of thin ice. Lamont stepped on one of said patches, his foot suddenly slipping and nearly sending the man sprawling on the floor.

    "C-careful! It's slippery here..."

Now mindful of his footing, Lamont kept heading onwards, looking back every now and then to see how Sandal was doing. After a while, the tunnel widened, and a soft, blueish glow became visible at the end. When the two explorers stepped into it, they found themselves on a small platform, high above the ground. But that was not all they saw.

A large, almost dome-like chamber lay before them, dimly lit by a glow that seemed to come from deep inside the ice. It covered the entire space, coated the floors and walls, sprang up from the floor in sharp spikes and hung from the ceiling in huge icicles.

The most peculiar sight was in the center of the room. On top of a pair of sharp rocks, jutting out from the ice, perched an odd contraption, looking almost like some sort of brazier. Though it contained no kindling of any sort.

Lamont could only stare at the chamber before him. It did not look like this was something naturally occuring, as far as he was aware ice was not supposed to glow, nor be found so deep underground. Then again, science was not his strong suit, and perhaps the strange phenomena were what had attracted the expeditions in the first place.

"So, here's our cave. Now to look for treasure."

As Lamont slipped the Moblin would tilt his head to the side like a curious dog, fitting since his face resembled that of a pit bull. He would step onto the ice without hesitation, but his foot wouldn't slide. No he had perfect traction even on the slippery ice. Once again his snowshoe ring was helping him out in this frozen area. As the two entered into the large, dome-like chamber Sandal would stop and look around.

    "Pretty."

After standing still gazing upon the mystical glow of the chamber he would start walking forward, past Lamont. He was too simple to have a fear of the unknown. His head would be turning left and right as he gazed upon the room around him. He was fascinated by his surrounding, his mind wondering if he could turn any of this mystical ice into a piece of armor. He just didn't have the knowledge needed to figure out how to keep the ice from freezing it's wearer or melting. His focus would be taken away from the ice as Lamont mentioned treasure again pulling Sandal back into the moment.

    "Find treasure."

With a nod Sandal would look away from the walls and the icicles and begin to look around the rest of the room. His eyes landing on the brazier finally. Slowly he would walk towards it, and look it over. He knew what a brazier was, but he didn't see any soot residue or any hint that anything had ever been burned in it. Sandal hadn't encountered Blue Fire before. The mystical flame that burns without the need for a fuel to burn was a foreign thought to Moblin.

Lamont followed Sandal down the platform, onto the floor of the cavern. The brazier was too high up for him to inspect from down there, but as long as there was no kindling, he would not be able to light it anyway. But it was a sign that they had not been the first people to find this place.

And, walking around the rocks to the other side, Lamont discovered even more signs of earlier visitors.

Half-frozen in the ice was an odd, large bundle. A bundle containing the remains of a person, Lamont found out to his horror. It appeared to be one of the members of a former expedition. Next to the frozen corpse lay a few charred branches, as if they had attempted to light a fire. But what interested the Hylian, after he had overcome the shock of finding a dead body, was the small roll of paper clenched between cold, stiff fingers.

    "Hmm, what's this?"

With a bit of effort (though it was more trying to wrench open the corpse's hand), Lamont pried the roll loose. Once unrolled, it turned out to be a page from a report of some sorts. The date was smudged out, as were several passages, but some of the words were still legible.

"Find... Blue Fire?" Lamont read the words again. Sure, he had once heard of blue fire, but he had no idea how to actually obtain it, only that it was a certain magical substance. And what was he supposed to do with it once he had it? What would it do?

He looked up at the brazier. What on earth would happen if they were to light it? There was only one way to find out.

"Sandal, do you know anything about Blue Fire?"

Sandal had already begun to walk off down a different tunnel that would have presumably lead to the next chamber, or another clue when Lamont called out to him causing him to stop and turn around. His face had the most perplexed look on it as the words blue fire repeated themselves over and over in his mind.

"Blue Fire?" His confusion and curiosity could clearly be heard in his question. While he was used to working around fire when making metal armors, those were just your average mundane red and yellow flames. He had never encountered, or heard of, the magical Blue Fire before now.

"No. Fire red." He seemed almost angry as he made his statement as if he felt Lamont had been trying to play a trick on him. Turning back around he would once again start making his way through the tunnel he had almost started down before. "Find treasure." The Moblin was only muttering to himself as he walked slowly down the tunnel, the image of the brazier still in his mind along with the word fire. There was no way of telling what he would find at the end of this tunnel, nor did he have any clue about the dangers that potentially lie in wait deeper in. Although Sandal would probably welcome some form of guardian that he had to fight over finding a puzzle to solve. Though if the earlier room was any clue as to what he would find ahead of him, it would probably turn out to be yet another puzzle of some sort.

    "H-hey! Wait up!"

Sandal seemed more interested in finding treasure than some long-lost report. And although Lamont would normally agree with him, he could not shake the feeling that there was something important about the page. But that had to wait, as he threatened to lose his companion out of sight as the giant suit of armour walked into a tunnel. The Hylian quickly followed, tucking the crumpled page in his pocket.

The tunnel let to another, smaller room, illuminated by the same otherwordly glow. But contrary to the larger room, the floor here was a completely flat sheet of ice. Lamont had never seen such pure ice before, completely void of any marks, scratches, and above all, very slippery. He found out the latter the moment he set foot on it, slowly sliding into the room whether he wanted to or not. Moving around was going to be a challenge.

As the two adventurers stepped onto the ice, the could hear something shifting and cracking behind them. Turning back, the noticed the exit had been covered by a thick sheet of ice. Pounding on it did little, did not even cause a tiny crack. The tunnel had been closed off.

But that was not the only problem. At the same time, two Stalfos dropped from the ceiling, their skeletal bodies covered with strips of frozen skin and remnants of fur coats.

    "Sandal! Watch out!"

While it was true that Sandal was more interested in the hidden treasure over the puzzle the reasoning behind it was rather simple. The treasure could be sold so that the Moblin could tinker with his armor even more than he already had. That reason aside, the truth of the matter is that Sandal was just far too simple to crack the puzzle. If he tried to solve it he would probably do nothing more than give himself a headache.

As he walked into the smaller room he would only watch Lamont go sliding as he stepped on the ice. Stepping out on the ice he wouldn't slide like his companion, and would walk towards the center of the room. He would stop short of the center of the room as he heard the shifting and cracking. He would quickly run toward the entrance and slam his fists upon the sheet of ice that sealed them within the room. All of his pounding would be for naught though. He hadn't made a single scratch, and just as he reached for the large club, hanging from his waist, Lamont would call out to him.

Turning around Sandal would see the two Stalfos' that had just dropped into the room. Lifting up his large club with his right hand Sandal would begin his running advance towards the two Stalfos. His heavy steps would echo throughout the room with a clank. As he neared the first Stalfos he would lift his club up over his head and bring it down hard in an attempt to turn the skeleton into nothing more than dust. Unfortunately the Stalfos was more agile than he was and easily side stepped the attack.

The skeleton would swing its scimitar at Sandal connecting with the Moblin's arm with a loud clang. Sandal's armor was strong enough to take such a basic attack with ease leaving Sandal himself unharmed. Swinging his left arm towards the Stalfos right after the strike he would manage to push it backwards, but failed to do any damage to it. The skeleton wasn't ready to give up though. No, it had decided to try and remove some of the armor from the large beast in front of it.

As Sandal swung his club horizontally at the Stalfos it would jump up high, flipping over Sandal's head, striking at the back of the Moblin's head as it did so. The Helm Splitter that the Stalfos had just done had knocked Sandal's helmet off and sent it skipping and sliding across the frozen floor, and far out of reach of it's owner. Fear and panic took over Sandal at this point. He was smart enough to know that Hylians like Lamont hated Moblins such as himself, and now what we was had been revealed. Turning around he would look from the Stalfos to Lamont and then back again. He wasn't sure what to do. Nor was he sure of what Lamont would do now that he could see the pit bull like face of Sandals.

    Oh boy. That was unexpected.

Lamont stood there, gaping at his companions true identity. From his size, he'd already guessed he was probably not quite human, but that Sandal was a Moblin came as a shock. Although said shock was quickly interrupted by one of the Stalfos that had skidded over to the Hylian and nearly hacked his head off.

Just in time, Lamont bended over, narrowly avoiding getting a rusty sword in his neck. He pushed himself forward with his feet, sliding across the ice. Worrying about Sandal would come later. He needed his help to defeat the Stalfos first.

"We'll talk about your face later, I need your help with these guys!"

The Hylian drew his cutlass, pointing it forward, and using the slippery ice under his feet to gain momentum, launched himself at the nearest Stalfos.

Although Lamont was asking for help Sandal wasn't sure if he would be able to trust the Hylian after the Stalfos had been dealt with. Of course if he wanted to survive the encounter with the Stalfos he was going to need Lamont's help, if the two were to fight after that at least it would be one on one. Looking to Lamont one last time as he mentioned needing help he would only nod his head. As it turns out taking his eyes off of the Stalfos in front of him for a second time was something of a bad idea. It had popped out one of its ribs and thrown it at him! The rib had struck him hard in the side of the head, the blunt force rattled his skull a bit and even caused a small cut. With a scream, which was more of a roar, Sandal would blindly swing his club at the Stalfos causing it to drop the second rib it had just pulled out to throw at him as it back stepped out of the way of the club once more.

The Stalfos wasn't planning on giving Sandal the time he needed to figure anything out though as it ran towards him and jumped into the air once more. It was clear that the Stalfos was aiming to strike down Sandal with a second Head Splitter! While it wasn't a bad idea, the Moblin wouldn't be struck down by the same attack that had removed his helmet. The jump into air had left the Stalfos defenseless against any sort of counter-attack. Swinging his arm up over his head Sandal would bring his large club up to strike the Stalfos in the side sending it flying though the air for a moment before crashing down hard on the ground. Bones would break and scatter about the ground as he turned his attention towards Lamont and the second Stalfos.

Unsure if he should approach the Hylian, even in an attempt to try and help, he would stay put for now and watch things unfold.

While Sandal was dealing with the other Stalfos, Lamont slid across the ice at high speed, zooming in on the other. He collided with the animated corpse, sending shattered bones flying everywhere. Frost had made the Stalfos more brittle than usual, although the one he had crashed in did manage to keep its head and one arm.

Though with one leg missing, it did not pose as much of a thread. Lamont easily dodged its blade, hacking off its remaining arm with his cutlass. The Stalfos made a last-ditch effort to bite the Hylian, but a swift kick to its skull send that flying as well, and it shattered on the ice with a satisfying crack.

But now the room was filled with a sudden silence.

With the Stalfos defeated, Lamont had no choice but to react to the sudden revelation that was Sandal's identity.
Sandal had helped him before, and had not seem hostile at all, but Lamont had never seen a friendly Moblin. The man remained in the middle of the room, unsure if he should approach Sandal or not.

"...Are you okay? That- that was quite the surprise there."

Sandal wasn't sure what to do or what to say now that the threats had been taken care of. Lamont hadn't come after him yet, in fact he was asking if he was alright. Maybe the Hylian wasn't against accepting the idea that there were such things as kind Moblins? Then again it could be a trick to get him to drop his guard and put his weapon away. Though if that was the case it was about to work because Sandal wasn't smart enough to figure that out. He had already fastened his club back to his belt and had turned away from Lamont towards the side of the room that his helmet had bounced off to.

    "Me fine."

The Moblin was walking away from Lamont towards his helmet so that he could put it back on. He figured that having his helmet back on would help ease the tension and would make both of them feel better. Well it was more that putting his helmet back on would make him feel better mainly. The uncomfortable silence that had filled the room moments before was already flooding back. Even for one as simple as Sandal it was uncomfortable.

"Lamont nice. Sandal nice. Sandal help Lamont."

While most of that had already been said before the Moblin thought that restating his intentions would help put the Hylian at ease. While it was clearly a peculiar situation for Lamont, Sandal had been in this situation many times before. Before he wore full armor the hood of a cloak would get blown down revealing his face, or tripping and having his helmet fall off. Too many times before had he traveled with a Hylian and his identity been revealed by accident. While it usually resulted in a fight, there had been a few rare occasions where they had remembered the way he had been acting and knew that his race didn't matter. It was the only reason he had ventured into the cave with Lamont in the first place. Because it wasn't certain that his identity was going to be revealed, and even if it was, there was always a chance that it wouldn't matter by that point.

Lamont stared at Sandal's head for a little while, even after he had put the helmet back on. Then he shook his head and smiled. A Moblin and a Hylian. It was an unusual alliance, but Lamont had faced many odd situations in his life. Sandals simply logic had taken away any trace of doubt the pirate had.

"That's a nice way of thinking. Come, let's g- Oh?"

The Hylian had made a move towards the door, when his eye fell on something amongst the scattered bones on the floor. It was another page. Or at least half of it. This time, it contained no words, only sketches of the brazier they had seen before, though it seemed there was something underneath it as well. The sketch was vague and unfinished, and something had burned the lower part off, but to the two adventurers it appeared as though the brazier might be part of some mechanism.

"What on earth where they looking for here?"

While Sandal wasn't sure what was on the scraps of paper that Lamont kept picking up they were clearly puzzling him. Though what those that were here before them were looking for was clear enough to the Moblin. They had come in search of the same thing had brought Lamont to the cave, and drew Sandal in once he showed up. Treasure. The one thing that so many of the races of Hyrule had in common was the desire to find treasure for one reason or another. While some looked for it for money, others enjoyed the hunt, while some wanted to horde as much treasure as possible. While the reason there were in this cave was clear to him, where they should head next was a mystery to Sandal. He didn't have the best sense of direction, after all he did end up at the cave by mistake in the first place.

    "Find treasure. Which way?"

As he spoke Sandal would look around the room trying to determine which way to go next. Hopefully Lamont didn't have as bad of a sense of direction as Sandal did otherwise the two of them probably wouldn't ever make their way out of the cave.

Giving the bones a last look-over, Lamont noticed a rather nice ring between them. He picked it up, turning it between his fingers. It had a nice silvery sheen, its surface dotted with engravings of strange shapes. Snowflakes, the pirate noticed. He took off his glove and slipped it around his finger, suddenly feeling a strange sensation under his feet.

    "That's... strange."

Lamont looked down, scraping his foot over the ice and finding his footing remarkably sturdy. Was this the same kind of magic that Sandal was using to move across the ice so effortlessly?

But Sandal was more interested in finding more treasure.

"Easy now, we're getting there." Lamont said with a chuckle.

There was only one other door besides the one through which the duo had entered, leading to yet another tunnel. Which led to yet another room. Although this room was different from the former. It was square-ish in layout, with the same peculiar ice flooring the adventurers had seen before, though it was riddled with large holes.

Peeking carefully over the edge of one of the holes, Lamont saw only darkness. There was no telling how deep it actually was, and something in the back of his head told him that he most likely did not want to find out.

Never one to hesitate Sandal would make his way into the next room as Lamont was peeking over the edge of one of the holes. His foot would come down heavily next to one of the holes and a few chunks of ice would give way falling into the infinite blackness of the hole. Turning his head and peering into the hole as the ice fell the Moblin would stop moving and look towards Lamont. Sandal had instantly become terrified of this room and the chance of falling to his death.

Slowly Sandal would inch his way back towards the entrance of the room. Why couldn't the floor be solid? Between his natural weight and the weight of his armor on top of that probably wasn't helping matters. Though Sandal was hesitant to strip off his armor even if it would potentially help him make it safely through the room in front of him.
