Seems like talking wasn't going to be an option, no matter how hard Guzol had hoped for it.

"Well... I don't have special breath like you do... I don't even have anything wet or cold with me." Panic was starting to rise in his chest, but he tried his hardest to keep it hidden from his colleague. Sayomi was at an advantage against the ice witch, but Guzol had nothing of the sort against the other, the fire witch. He narrowed his eyes, deep in thought. If they could somehow either delfect the witches' spells or get them to attack eachother somehow...

"It's just an idea, but..." He leant to Sayomi, quietly whispering. "But what if we tried to get each on one side of the room, with us in between? I think we might be able to work out something to somehow get them to hit eachother, or at least annoy eachother enough to give a few more precious seconds."

Sayomi turned to Guzol as he spoke, tired eyes visible under her visor and even as he finished, she continued looking for a few more seconds before facing the witches, simply watching them fly around for nearly a minute before she spoke again, "Alright, I don't think we can do any better..." her voice grim and raspy. She knew the plan needed near perfect angles and timing to work, not to mention it meant having both witches alive for most of the fight.

Even then, would she still have enough left in her to take out the last witch?

Still, there was no sense waiting to die she thought, taking her weight off her sword and slowly stepping from the shadows.

"Aye. Good luck, big girl." Guzol said softly, taking up his spear and limping towards the other side of the room.

If they wanted this plan to work, they were going to have to be able to work together perfectly, probably even without speaking. He hoped their time spent training together back at the barracks would be enough to pull it off. If not... well, he didn't like to think about that.

In the meantime the witches had been eyeing the two soldiers closely, circling slowly towards the center of the room. They now just had to wait until each of them were facing the right witch, and then they could set the plan in motion.

The clank of armor echoed as Sayomi slowly made her way to the middle of the room, the witches circling above them, slowly descending and moving inward closer to the companions two. She could feel the tension building within her, her breaths became faster and shallower as she struggled to maintain control of her last effective weapon. Blood and sweat leaked in equal measure from the armored form, while she raised her visor to reveal her face; the only point of her steel-encased form to betray her true nature.

The witches flew by the knight every few seconds, alternating their dark red and light blue forms. With each pass growing closer while their vile grins only grew larger. With the armor blocking any sort of touch and her own ragged breath covering any minute sound he would be making, she trusted that Guzol had her back.

Finally, the twins had flew close enough, cocky that the Darknut had weakened them to breaking and the girl, unable to properly control her injured body, simply forced a deep breath into her lungs before releasing a gust of flame onto the ice witch.

    Suddenly, things went very fast.

Right as Sayomi hit the ice-witch with her fiery breath, the other witch swept down towards Guzol, who quickly dropped himself on the ground. Overhead, the witches crashed into eachother with a spectacular cry, though they seemed to be relatively undamaged by the hit. Instead, it seemed to have only made them angrier. But that might just work to the guards' advantage...

While the ice witch spun around, trying to dispel the fire, her sister was reeling from the crash and slowly loading up a fire spell. The flickering of the flames growing above her hand were reflected in the ice shards on the ceiling, which gave Guzol an idea.

He took a few deep breaths, trying to steady the arm holding his spear, aiming it upwards. Then, with all the strength he could muster, he threw the spear at the shards of ice. Perhaps if he had been stronger he would've been able to bring down more, but the rain of small but sharp icicles that fell down towards the witch were already something.

Sayomi attack went better than expected, the fire managed to confuse and frighten one of the witches enough to collide with the other and set the edges of her clothing on fire; meanwhile Guzol even managed to begin to harm the fire witch with the glassy shards.

But a few cuts and confusion were not going to stop the sisters, and before long had collected the wits and were back on the assault. The ice witch disappeared from her view while the fire-y one (not the on fire) descended upon Say, intent obvious.

But despite the impending attack the girl's legs refused to move, and she could barely shit her weight. In her excitement, she had momentarily forgotten her exhaustion and the damage she suffered. Instead she did the first thing to come to her mind; drop to one knee and take the hit with her back armor.

The flames engulfed her form, though the brunt of the attack was broken on her back, the fire licked her skin and the heat singed her throat as she breathed. The pain swallowed her as wholly as the flames, an aeon passed inside her red cocoon before it conceded to the air around.

Armor charred black and hot enough to distort the the sight of the others, the woman stood; shaky, sweating and alive. The battle still dominated the area, and the ice witch was without exception. Overconfidence took over mind and flew too close, as much to kill as mock. Even in her disorientation Say saw her chance and a blackened gauntlet pulled the hag close to the warping metal and the water between them began it's song of ice and fire.

While the ice shards had done some damage to the fire witch, it was far from enough to get her down. Instead, the cuts only seemed to have angered her more. And with that anger she lost the caution she had at the beginning of their battle.

She rushed at him, broom low to the ground and pointed every so slightly downward for speed, and that's where Guzol took his chance. He waited until the last moment, before lifting his spear over the end of the broomstick and pushing it down into the ground. The witch whizzed past him, and was send spinning when the end of her broom collided with the floor, landing in a messy heap further down the room.

In the meantime Guzol had caught sight of Sayomi, who had the ice witch in an iron grip and was pressing her to her heated armour. Steam hissed and rose up from between the two, almost hiding them from sight. Not checking back to the fire witch, Guzol got up and scrambled towards his companion, calling out her name with a raspy voice.

Steam flew from the entangled witch, filling the air with a sound like a dozen whistles. By the time her armor cooled and chilled, she had nearly lost sight of her companion through the white mist. As she felt frost start to form on the inside of her armor, Sayomi released her opponent who began to float upward and toward the centre of the arena.

It was now that she noticed that the other witch begun to do the same, illuminating the room far better than before as the fire and internal glow of the ice bounced off the encrusted walls. Slowly they began to turn around each other, spinning faster and soon the blur fused into one.

Out of this display came one being, a supremely tall, young Gerudo-like witch with a ponytail on one side of her consisted of red fire, while the other glistening with cold.

Along the way to his companion, Guzol had picked up his spear, and was using it as a support while he limped across the room, unaware of the witches starting to spin around eachother.

It was only when he had made it over to Sayomi, and when the room suddenly lit up as if someone had lit a huge fire, that he turned around. He had gripped his colleague's shoulder tightly, partly in shock, partly as a reassurance for himself. That so far, no matter how battered they were, they were still alive. Though there was no saying how much longer they would be able to fight. Guzol was hurt, exhausted and close to keeling over, with his breathing ragged and raspy and his legs unsteady as he moved. He even felt too tired to utter a word when the single witch revealed herself, only taking in a sharp breath and looking at the display in horror.

This was going to be over soon, though he was uncertain in whose favour that would be.

Say's skin was burnt to a bright red underneath her armor as the effects of both the fire and steam bath, causing her to lean heavily with both hands on her sword, struggling to hold onto consciousness as she watched the witches emerge. Her companion wasn't faring much better either limping, bleeding and being in generally unfighting condition.

Perhaps their saunas and shiny-spikey-death-fall had a real effect on their enemies as the witches' features betrayed their fatigue and state of body; seemingly to have combined more to remain in some form still capable of combat than as a way to truly augment their full abilities.

Still, in her current state a Deku baba would've been more than a match for the girl, lacking even the strength to properly swing her sword. Only a single viable idea entered her concussed skull, and with time at a premium she merely winked at Guzol hoping he'd get the message.

The Hylian lifted her helm revealing the burnt, scratched, bleeding and bruise visage underneath.

"I don-" a sputter forces its way through a word as she speaks, carrying blood with it. Catching her breath she breathes a small gout of flame onto the blade.

"Don't need m-agic" as she spews what is obviously the last of her magic power onto the sword, giving it a dark-red glow.

"Or swords" as she release her grip on the object, leaving it standing, the tip lodged in a stone crack.

"Or shields or armor." soon much of the defenses lay around her, actually somewhat glad to be free of the steel coffin.

"Just— me" as she stumbles toward her superior opponent and near certain doom.

Guzol held his breath as he watched Sayomi. He knew she wanted him to do something, but at first he was not entirely sure what. Then, as she lit her sword on fire and plunged it into the ground, a vague idea started to form. When his colleague kept walking towards the witches, having caught their undivided attention with her speech, he nodded.

    Of course.

The bearded man knew what Sayomi wanted him to do. He made his way over to the sword, trying to move as fast as he was still able, but also quietly, as not to draw attention away from the other. If Sayomi could keep the single witch distracted for long enough...

With a sigh of relief, Guzol reached the sword, wrapping his hand around the handle, and pulled it out. The heat coming off the weapon was intense, distorting the air around it. He lifted it up, as if he would lift his spear.

And then, with all the effort he could muster, he threw the sword, aiming for the distracted witch.

She only saw it coming at the last moment, raising her arms in a futile attempt to protect herself, as the sword caught her in the chest. Suddenly her hair flared up and shone brightly all at once, radiating a light so bright it was almost painful to watch.

    "N-no... NOOOOOO!"

With a pained cry, the witch fell to her knees, trying to grasp at the sword embedded in her body, but soon her hands fell beside her, limp. The light from her hair had started to fade, and the gerudo suddenly seemed to be aging rapidly, with her young face starting to sag and her body growing frail.

"You... It can't be! I shouldn't have been defeated! No! Curse you! No no no!" She screamed, weakly banging the floor with her fists. A black swirling shadow had appeared under her, growing larger and darker, until it completely enveloped her. The black mass twisted and shuddered, until it suddenly stopped and ebbed away, leaving only the two frail bodies of the witches on the ground.

"Im... Impossi...ble..." The blue one croaked.

Wether the red one had anything to say or not, the two soldiers would never know, as suddenly a gust of wind blew throughout the room, as if a door had been opened somewhere far away, scattering the bodies of the witches as if they had been made of sand, leaving only a handful of dust.

A second of triumphant silence in the temple was broken as the knight and her sword hit the ground at once. As she knelled there, dust blowing around her, quietly thankful that her partner had been quick-witted to take advantage of her ploy.

Within moments the strange wind revealed a blue light reaching up and the frost and ice above shone magnificently down; Sayomi pushed herself back to sit and stared up at the glistening ceiling. For minutes she stayed and admired the accidental beauty making it appear more as a ballroom than a crypt, even her burns and bruises dulled, her heart subsided.

After the awe of such majesty passed she prepared herself to enter the light.

Guzol's breath caught in his throat. It was over. The fight was finally over and they were still alive.

His body suddenly felt limp and heavy, and the pain of his wounds returned in full force, as the adrenaline rushing through his veins was starting to subside. It had been the only thing that had kept him going. Guzol managed to limp over to his colleague, Sayomi, laying a weak hand on her shoulder and sank to the floor.

"We're... we're alive." He said in a hoarse whisper, as if he could not believe it. Then, slowly, a wide smile appeared on his face when it dawned on him. He wrapped his arms around Sayomi, pulling her into a tight hug. "We're alive! We made it! Oh goddess..."

He could only laugh, relief washing over him.

Sayomi initially froze with pain as her companion gripped her tightly, an expression of pain rushed her face, but as the pain subsided her body remained locked in nervousness and a blush appeared.

"Y-Yeah, we are." She spoke with what little energy she could muster, her state coloring her voice. The knight slowly returned the hug, not as enthusiastically but far more gently then her compatriot, in a way that seemed to betray their victory was not the reason she had done so.

After the initial relief and joy at having survived a battle against all odds, Guzol suddenly became very aware of his colleague in his arms. His laughter quickly subsided into an embarrassed cough, as he realised he had hugged Sayomi far longer and tighter than was appropriate.

"Ah, well... L-looks like we can finally head back." Guzol stammered, dropping his arms to his side, before proceeding to fuss with his damaged armour and clothing, clearly unsure where to put his arms.

The hug had been pleasant, more than pleasant even, but the soldier was not quite sure how to handle his own feeling towards his companion. And neither did he know how Sayomi felt about it. Oh well, there was still the way back to Castle Town, and plenty of time to find out. If he could muster the courage to ask her.

Guzol tried to get back on his feet, but came no further than sitting on his knees, his legs feeling too heavy and painful to move. He tried again, struggled to put down one leg, his sense of accomplishment short-lived when it could not bear his weight, sending him down onto the floor again.

"Uh, Say...? I'm afraid you're gonna have to help me get up."

Sayomi took her companion's hand, pulling him to his feet exhausting much of her already dwindling energy. Placing her arm across his shoulder and his across her's, together they stammered, zig-zagging closer to the light.

It was all too obvious just how poor their condition was; each could barely walk and at times were forced to lean on the other, more time spent trying to just will her legs to move then actually make them do so. Yet the air felt too still somehow, that some event overshadowed their victory, that something still had to be said.

"Looks like you owe me dinner" she spoke, without obvious provocation. "My plan, my sword after all. So how about Sunday night?" she teased, as much to break the silence as the enjoyment of it. "Ohh, and you can pick me up."

Just as Say finished her quip, her left foot entered the light and relief flooded her. The pain, the exhaustion, the excitement and the fear, all behind her now. As the two ascended into the air, there was nothing left but... left butt... A look of sheer terror crossed her face as she hopelessly reached out:

    "NOOOOO! MY BUTT ARMOR!"

    [End]
