Julius stood in front of the opening to the sewers. It was a small entryway that consisted of barely noticeable latch worked into a plethora of iron bars. Behind them was an abyss that was as unmoving and unnerving as Death's face, waiting to claim the unlucky souls who, through a matter of happenstance or a simple need for a job, had been forced onto this ungodly duty. A green muck crawled out from behind the bars, slowly trailing off through the canal channels to Nayru knows where.

One thing of note about Julius was that, rather than his usual armored garb, he was instead wearing knee-high black rubber boots, to which his plain black suspenders with golden-looking buttons were tucked into. He wore them over an even plainer shirt, being a drab gray in appearance. His sword, of course, still hung by his side, though he lacked his accompanying shield. He hunched over small piece of finished wood, to which several papers were clipped onto by a simple metal mechanism. It was an unusual tool for Julius indeed, but he knew how to work it nevertheless. Slowly, he plucked one paper after the other up, revealing another piece that lay beneath it. In addition to various papers and documentations he had gathered about the two, there were also various other sheets that had something dull and uninteresting scrawled onto them, or were a blank, supplemental sheet of paper, though everyone knew he hated writing almost as intensely as he hated wearing these hot, stuffy overalls.

It was two o'clock, and he was expecting the hirees to show up any moment now. As he waited, he sparked up a bit of boring small talk with a rather large man, being many times... wider than Julius. "'Ey boss, gotta clean the sewers, eh?" the man spoke in a slightly interested tone, much to Julius's disdain. "Seems as much..." he trailed off, praying for their arrival soon.

Lamont hurried through the streets, glacing at the note in his hand every now and then to check if he was going in the right direction.

He had taken on the job out of sheer desperation, after a heist on a mansion in the rich part of town had failed. Luckily no one had found out he was involved, so he could easily hop to the next job without worrying about the authorities breathing down his neck. For now, at least.

After a few more minutes and a lucky turn, he arrived at the place written down on the note, the entrance to the sewers of Castle Town. In front of the entrance were two men, seemingly making small talk with each other.

Lamont approached them slowly, then stopped.

"Uh, hello? Is one of you..." He checked the note again to make sure he got the name right. "Julius Surgate?"

"I still can't believe you agreed to this." Melda, the ever-concerned fairy said, floating at a leisurely pace by her master. "We could have waited for something else, anything! Do you even know what a sewer is!?"

Keera, who was actually rather excited about the prospect of exploring the undersides of a town, merely nodded at her fairy. She knew that anything she said would only invite another round of moaning from her companion. Keera had decided that it was time for her to get out and see the world. Although her home would always have its earthly charm, her inquisitiveness for what else existed in Hyrule became too much to ignore. After much travel, she had wound up in Castle Town. After a guard had rather bluntly told her to attend the embassy, she had been notified that in order to remain as a peaceful, law-abiding member of the public, Keera had to prove she was willing to help the town. The embassy clerk very quickly suggested the sewer work, much to Melda's horror. Having not even questioned whether this was a legitimate procedure, Keera accepted the task.

"It's going to sink. Towns stink, sewers are worse!"

"You don't have to come." Keera answered in a light tone, rousing her fairy into a chime.

    "You're terrible, Keera."

She had asked several people for directions, and eventually found the opening to what she presumed was a sewer. Keera had been told that a man named Julius was leading the job. Fortunately, she heard the name be called; Julius Surgate.

Unenthusiastically followed by Melda, the Kokiri approached the three men.

"Hello... I'm here to help out with the sewer. I am Keera." With that she offered a brief curtsey.

"Right, then. Pleasure to meet the both of you; I apologize for the... rather inhumane working conditions," Julius spoke, abruptly ending conversation with the portly man next to him. A certain emphasis hung to his words; it seemed that even he was unenthusiastic about the task. Of course, it was menial man labour; though, it was almost certainly dangerous. "The smell itself is said to kill!" Julius spoke, following it with a slight laugh of his own. "In all seriousness, this is a boring job under harsh conditions. There... probably isn't much fun to be had; not here, at least." He continued to speak; it was standard procedure, of course it wasn't entirely necessary due the waivers attached to the clipboard. He was boring himself at this point, simply ending his explanation of what exactly their mission was. "So, let's go ahead and get started."

The sun still hung high in the sky as the lock popped open and the gate swung open. An ominous gust blew forth from the sewer, reeking of many... unmentionable scents. He set one foot in front of the other, noticing the viscosity of the unpleasant green goop increase. As he approached the walkway, he sunk to his knees in a mixture of various liquids, but primarily... the ooze. It was sickening; irritating to his senses. Something that seemed to pervade his senses. It smelled worse than anything else he had ever smelled; even decaying Moblin corpses. He struggled through the substance, eventually wriggling free of its unholy grasp. "Ugh. Watch out for the goop... I'm not sure what it is, to be honest."

Lamont made a disgusted face, trying his hardest not to gag.

In his time both at sea and scraping out a living on the streets, he had never come across such a disgusting smell as this. When he saw Julius working his way through the muck, Lamont deeply regretted not having any equipment to deal with this. Why did he take on a job in the sewers again?

"Yeah... I'm not sure I want to know..." He muttered, slowly setting his first foot into the substance. It was kind of warm, even through the leather of his boots, and he was not entirely sure whether that was a good thing. After putting his other foot in it he turned his head around to Keera.

"Uh, do you need help? I mean, for someone your size, this stuff is pretty deep."

Keera's curiosity was dimmed somewhat at the introduction of the pungent smell. There were a few stagnant pools on the edges of the Kokiri Woods, but those only appeared during the summer when the rains were absent. The smell had of those had done little to prepare her for this, however. Melda didn't say a word, but forced her way into Keera's dress. She could practically feel 'I told you so' vibrating from her fairy's body against her chest.

It's just like pain, she told herself. If you ignore it, it's not as bad.

Taking a slow, deliberate breath, Keera watched as Julius lowered himself into the filth. She was not afraid of getting dirty, but this viscous gunk... It didn't look natural. Maybe it was poisonous.

"Oh... How... would you assist me?" Come to think of it, that stuff would probably rise up to her chest, not to mention how much it would stick in her hair.

Julius looked at his employees, watching them wallow through the filth. It was an unusual goop; nothing like it had ever been reported before. Still, he offered his hand to the small, fragile Kokiri; it was only reasonable, considering it would be halfway up her body without any effort. Taking her delicate hand, he pulled her onto the cement walkway, as they began to make their way into the sewer.

Another strong gust of foul smelling air wafted through the sewers; how much breeze could there possibly be in the sewers? It was buried deep beneath the city, so it was enigma to him. Still, there were stranger things at hand. He continued through the sewer, pulling a map out from overalls. It showed every possible route and way through the winding sewers. It seemed almost impossible to make your way through it in just one trip, but he was convinced they could do it. They came to an intersection up ahead, forcing the group to make a decision. "Left or right," he asked his employees. It was their job, after all; he was simply here for management.

Having carried Keera across the muck, Lamont climbed out himself, trying to ignore the sensation of the goop slowly sliding off him.

He resisted the urge to pinch his nose against the stench, instead following Julius at a brisk pace. Strangely enough, there still seemed to be some kind of wind blowing through the sewers, even though Lamont was pretty sure they were, in fact, underground. Right when he started to think the older man knew where they were going, he stopped at an intersection amd posed a question.

"Oh, uh..." Lamont stared at the two options. Both looked equally dark and uninviting. He made a gesture with his finger, pointing at one of the two ways and then at the other, before going back again, mentally reciting a rhyme he had once learned as a child.

    "Hmmm... Left...?"

Keera was extremely grateful for the assistance both of the men gave her. Once the cement pathway ceased, Lamont took to carrying her. She did feel a pang of guilt: seeing the two men trudge through the foul concoction while she remained pristine like a prized pony. She silently vowed that she would make herself extra useful after this initial shortcoming.

When they approached the intersection, Keera had been placed down on the cement walkway once more. These man-made mazes could be no different to woodland. There, you could use the sun, the stars and landmarks to navigate your way. But here, they were faced with two practically identical tunnels; both dripping constantly with the filth.

"Melda, any advice?" Keera spoke into the top of her dress.

"I'm trying very hard to hold my breath!" The fairy replied. Until then, she had been doing a good job of ignoring the smell, but at the mention of it, a tendril of odor snaked up her nose. Wrinkling it, she shook her head, hoping it would dissipate like a waft of smoke.

"I'm not sure..." Keera said, feeling useless once more.
