The world can be disturbingly quiet, creating the most chilling sensation in a man's spine. Just another part of the world that was lost to demonic forces. An aging man turned to face the gathering of fledgling Demon Busters that were brought here.

The Demon Busters were still fairly new organization as a whole, no homogenized teaching procedures. That's good news on the mind of the man who looked upon them, some of them obviously annoyed, others with a look in their eyes that meant business. Would any of them know what to expect? He chuckles loudly, pacing himself along the hall.

This was Home IV, the one lost to demon infestations and poor Demon buster protocol. He used this place as a lesson for all DB that came under his tutelage. The white walls of the home were no longer white, smeared with dirt, blood and scars from the claws of demons. Just another mistake on the old man's heart of many mistakes.

" It is in my fair opinion, that the best way to teach a man how to function in the world of a DB is through experience. I will have you guys dive into this graveyard and learn its harshness. Beware the threat of Chimera, Pixies, and other such demons. It will be in your best Interests to work together, despite your instincts to argue otherwise. Wouldn't want to end up like the last group of DB I brought through here, do you? Other than the people you see next to you... this will be your best friend."

He tossed each of these DB a gauntlet-like object that can be identified as a COMP.

((Characters: Lysander, Evrard, Constance, Nikolai, Leocard))

Leocard did his best to keep himself calm.

He wasn't doing well. He still trembled a little, and he was sure his eyes lit up when the comp was tossed to him. He turned it over a few times in his hands, inspecting it. Yes... this was it, this was a COMP. This was the most essential characteristic of a DB.

As he put it on, he reflected on the circumstances. He was just a rookie DB now. Green, fresh out of a Home. Still... this was his first step. Surely he could become something great. Someone dependable, like the Buster who saved his life. He was becoming that which he had always loved, always idolized.

His hands shook lightly with a combination of excitement and fear. Training was just about to begin. He wanted it, but at the same time he knew nothing of what he was about to face. It was an odd, tense sort of excitement.

He had it secured on his left arm now. He couldn't suppress a small smile as he held it up a bit, both to test it and admire it. In spite of the danger, in spite of the obvious signs of misfortune around him, he couldn't help getting a bit giddy. Maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something grand.

    Pixies...

Constance felt at an advantage already. She had been attacked by a group of Pixies before, and later spoken to them. Still, she had only a small idea about other demons; snippets that she'd heard from patrolling Demon Busters and her parents. She'd never seen what any demon other than a Pixie looked like.

She fumbled slightly when she was tossed a COMP, but managed to attach it without much trouble. Taking a deep breath, Constance took a hair tie from her dress pocket. Expertly and efficiently, she gathered and tied it at the bottom to give her long, brown hair some weight. That way it wouldn't fly over her shoulders and into her face if she needed to move quickly. She could tell that their instructor didn't agree with the length of her hair, but she refused to have it cut; her parents adored it.

"Yeah, demons have a thing about pretty girls..." One of the Pixies had told her, but Constance pushed the thought to the back of her mind. She wasn't pretty. Not really. As for working together, she was more than happy to do that. Facing a demon all by herself wasn't a welcoming thought. Constance only allowed herself a brief glance at the battle-scarred walls inside before she closed her eyes and calmed herself. She had to stay logical for her comrades. The image of her parents weeping at her death was enough for Constance's determination to flare. She was getting through this.

On the outside, Nikolai appeared calm and focused.

On the inside, he was tearing at the walls of his own brain and screaming in fear.

He hadn't slept a minute in the past three days, ever since he learned he had to go topside for his first day of training, something he had dreaded and managed to avoid since the accident. He had spent the biggest part of the past few days holed up in his room, trying to stay awake and trying to keep the nightmarish images from that day out of his mind. Things became even worse when he realized he'd be facing demons. Real demons who could inflict real damage. The bloodstains on the wall were proof of it.

Now that he was here, images of the accident flooded back into his mind. He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths to calm himself, having a breakdown on your first day didn't exactly seem like a good idea.

Luckily, the COMP he was tossed proved to be a good enough distraction for his mind. After fumbling around with the straps a bit, he fastened it to his left arm and pushed a few buttons to see if it worked.

His thoughts wandered to his parents. That morning, he had bid them an awkward goodbye, not sure if he should say ‘See you later’ or ‘Farewell’, as it was common knowledge a lot of the trainees didn’t return. At least not alive.
Something about that gave him a strange sort of determination. He wouldn’t fail, he couldn’t fail. It was his duty to fight the demons, to make sure no one became their victim and to prevent accidents like that one long ago.

    thunk

Evrard snorted and scowled at the fellow assembled DR-initiates around him. His first real chance to lash out and deal some real damage to the demons, and he was surrounded by obvious cowards and brats. He glances around the room and took in the wear and tear it had endured over the years, obviously from demons and possibly even from a few other humans. It got his blood boiling, and as he slapped the COMP onto his wrist absently, he lifted his sledgehammer and let the reforged head drop to the dusty ground once again.

    thunk

"Is there anything other than 'learning' you want us down there for?" Evrard looked to the old man. He was their superior, so anything Evrard might've felt about his appearance was bit back. Knowing how things worked, the old man could probably unleash a stronger demon than any of them could handle if they proved too rowdy. Bothersome. "Something killed, something obtained?"

"..." One never quite expects a childhood dream to come true, especially long after it's been forgotten, feet planted firmly in reality. Lysander grabbed the device thrown to him, not slowly nor quickly, just with quiet acceptance. He closed the straps about his wrist with a hiss and snap, the metal underbelly almost painfully cold against his bare skin. A shiver rippled from his arm, to shoulder, to spine, his body shifting uncomfortably for a moment. It felt as if the hot breath of a god blew through him, returning life to his once empty body.

He had fallen low. Wishing for an escape from the pain, he had wandered outside of the home, hoping for death to descend upon him quickly. But something within him could not let go of life, held it with a strange tenacity borne of something unknown to him. So he had fought the demon that had come for him, to end his unfortunate life, though he barely remembered it. And so, here he was now, a demon buster, at the age of thirty seven. How strange life is... He thought silently to himself, looking around the room. He was easily the oldest of the group. Almost as if to hide from the rest of the people present, his hands instinctively went to the side flaps of his woolen snow cap, pulling it down tighter around his head. The tassels, and the pom pom made of string on the crown of the hat, tossed about whimsically, incongruous with the quiet and somber man.

As he continued to observe his fellow demon busters in silence, his battered suit rustled softly, dust drifting to the floor with ever minute movement. Comrades...? It had been a long time, since he'd had anyone resembling the word, much less four other people. He suffered a momentary pang of bitterness; how could he entrust his life to, from his viewpoint, were just children? Wryly, he remembered that, to them, he probably looked more like an old man that would only slow them down. He instinctively grasped the ribbed metal of the old steel rod, the pain quieting his unstill emotions. His "spear", his savior in his time of need, was nothing more than an old steel support rod, taken from the broken remnants of a concrete pillar. But to him, it had importance, so he kept it with him, like a fetish to ward of evil spirits. He began to worry at the strong metal with his fingers, waiting for the instructor to address them again.

"It's about time we exchange greetings and pleasantries while we can, but I will respond to your question in a second. First..." the instructor rambled. When he stopped speaking for a moment, all the of the trainee db feel a sharp sudden pain in the arm they put their COMPs on, as they pierced their skins with a small needle to sample their abilities. In a matter of mere seconds, the needles returned to the COMP's interior.

He went up to each of the DB in turn, taking their COMP hand, and shaking it with his right, the arm with his comp clearly visible. With him having shaken their hand, their COMP came to life, showcasing a variety of applications and functions, one of them highlighted, and activated automatically.

Suddenly, on the red background of the COMP's screen came a large scrolling list of what appeared to be fellow Demon busters, all with one thing in common, save four. Next to the name of those other than these four it said one thing,

    "*_DECEASED_*"

The four closest to the bottom didn't share this feature, and the list of deceased DB hide itself from plain view in another file, to avoid cluttering the more important information. Two of them were familiar, once it loaded an appearance for them. One of them was the new owner of the COMP, the other being the DB instructor before them, with the name of "Aeric Garland". The other two were a mystery to the group.

"I am Aeric Garland, as your COMPs have clearly just told you. As the Young Man suggested, we're not here for no reason. The other two living signals on the COMP are two young DB recruits who got lost in here, and a Dark world warp is now affecting this Home now that all of the protective equipment has finally been stripped from the Home. Your missions are to secure them and confirmed their life or death status and to return them here in whatever state they may be in. Due to the nature of the Dark World, an Experienced DB must remain outside, and I will send you in as two separate groups."

"Lysander, Leocard, move to my right and stay here, the rest of you, to my left and shake COMP arms to link them, then proceed into the Home when you're ready."

Leocard only flinched a little at the prick. More from surprise than anything. So COMPs could do that too...? He checked briefly the information on its screen and raised an eyebrow. So their teacher was the former...? Wasn't that right here?

"Oh... right." Leocard hid his disappointment. He was going to be going in behind? Oh, well. He stood off to the side, pulling up his headphones and quietly lowering the volume. It was loud enough to make out the music clearly but he could also easily hear the outside world over it.

Signs of love overshadowed by dreams
Baby, don’t worry coz you ain’t alone...

He brushed some of his dirty blonde hair from his eyes, turning them towards the other who had to stay. The young man had to admit he was a little intimidated by the blonde-headed giant's stature, but still... "So we're going to be working together? I hope we can get along. I'm Leocard, it's nice to meet you..."

He held out his hand to the large Aryan man as an attempt to break the ice. His father had always told him shaking a man's hand was a good way to get a read on him...

So there was still some time for a civilised exchange before things turned barbarous... Constance wanted to rub the spot where the needle had pierced her skin, but the COMP prevented her from doing so. She was sure that there was the possibility of more pain to be endured inside. Constance was surprised by the strength of Aeric's handshake, and also by the activity that was spurred within her COMP. She glanced over at Leocard as he introduced himself, hoping the members of her group would be as courteous as he.

With a gentle sigh to expel the breath she was holding, along with a small hope that she could expel some anxiety too, Constance looked over her own group, consisting of a man who was clearly much older than she was, and a man who's eyes seemed powdered with some kind of hostility, she thought.

"I am Constance, also known as Connie if you'd prefer it." She spoke softly in order to keep her voice under control. She extended her hand first to the older man. As she looked into his eyes, she noticed quite prominent bags underneath them. She managed the briefest of smiles before the seriousness of the situation settled again. This time she was not fazed by the activity of her COMP as it registered her fellow Demon Busters, ringing true to their stated names.

Nikolai and Evrard both had their weapons to hand; they were going in first of course. Constance took a small metal bar from her dress pocket, clicking the mechanism in the middle which caused the quarterstaff to spring to its full length. She had been praying she wouldn't have to use it, but by the sounds of it, Constance was going to have to become accustomed to her weapon quickly.

Nikolai jumped and repressed the urge to scream when he felt the needle pierce through his skin, and nearly dropped his farming scythe. It was an old, battered thing, stolen from one of the equipment rooms in the home on his way to training. He had wielded something like it a few times before, when he had helped out with the harvest, but he wasn't sure if it was any good in battle. It was sharp, but also a bit on the heavy side, not to mention not very sturdy, but it was all he had been able to take, as his parents wouldn't have allowed weapons in their home.

The list of deceased DBs send a chill down his spine, Nikolai didn't like to be confronted with death, as it brought back painful memories. He could only shiver at the thought of the two recruits, lost somewhere in this hell. He lifted his head at his instructor when he heard about the Dark World.

"Why can't you go in, sir? Isn't it a little... dangerous to send in untrained people?"

It wasn't just that he was terrified to be facing demons on his own so soon, but he also that didn't have much faith in the ragtag group of people that were his colleagues. Would any of them know how to transport a wounded person without making things worse? Would any of them actually be able to fight well? They'd probably be of very little help to the two recruits. That is, if they were still alive by the time they reached them.

He shrugged uncomfortably when they got separated in two groups, shifting his scythe from one shoulder to the other. Nikolai looked his soon-to-be comrades up and down. The girl seemed to be around his age, but the other one, the tall man, seemed to be a lot older.

Nonetheless, he extended his hand to them and introduced himself.

    "I'm Nikolai. Sokolov."

Re: ShinMegamiTensei Chapters of the Broken World

So the little COMP toys needed blood to even work? That was a hell of a clue as to what sort of macabre bullshit he was about to get stuck in. Still, it didn't matter how crazy the Demon Busters or their vampire wristwatches were; if they got him out where he could smash some demons' skulls in, they could drain him dry if they wanted. He'd be dead soon enough anyway.

Evrard heaved his sledgehammer up and over onto his shoulder and moved to the left like the old man ordered. Things were getting easier now that the annoying vagueness to be a mysterious organization of murderers was going away. Get orders, fulfill orders, and either live or die through it. That was the easy way of doing things he preferred. He nodded to two of his comrades, 'Lysander' and 'Leocard,' apparently, and forcibly grabbed and shook the hands of the other two quickly.

"Evrard's all y'need to call me." He glared at the direction of the Home for a bit. "Let's all do this shit without dying, then."

Walking over to the boy with headphones, Lysander couldn't help but wonder if he could even hear their instructor speak. Apparently so, though, since he'd followed the man's instructions well enough. The tall man frowned slightly, looking at the screen of his COMP as directed. These certainly weren't the best odds... And it seemed a little strange to him, that if these Demon Busters recruits couldn't handle themselves against whatever was out there, what made Aeric think other recruits would do any better? But, Lysander was not one to run away, especially not now that he had nowhere to run to, anyways. With a grunt, he took his place next to Leocard, and was promptly greeted. Taken aback by the young man's openness, it took him a moment to register what was even being asked.

"Lysander..." the giant rumbled out, the bass of his voice trembling ever so slightly. Nodding his head just barely, he took Leocard's hand in his own. Yet for all his strength and muscle, he grasped the hand gently, almost gingerly, not as if he were afraid it would break, but as if he were somehow scared of it. As quickly as their hands came together, they parted, Lysander breaking the handshake so swiftly that it could hardly even be considered one. At least my partner seems nice enough... He thought, looking at the fairly cheerful young man. I am glad.

He itched at his arm, where the COMP had pierced his skin. It wasn't painful, but like a papercut, the pain didn't seem to go away, only becoming more annoying over time. "I guess we should probably link our COMPs..." Lysander proposed. Shaking the small device, he couldn't help but wonder how it worked. Blood, huh? he mused, quite curious as to why the blood was needed. It wasn't long before his mind turned to darker, things, though. Who was to say that the COMP didn't have the ability to kill its bearer, should the need arise? Looking at Aeric, Lysander was unable to suppress his question. "Will the COMPs ever come off, whether on accident or by design?"

"Now that you're finished greeting each other, get going. Take these last gifts, and go. I have nothing for you though, Evrard."

A pulse of demonic energy surged from Aeric, bleeding into Constance and Nicolai. The energy took hold inside of them, and began to weave itself, reading their personalities. The demonic energy eventually took shape, becoming part of them that they could easily grasp with their mind and use.

    Constance learned DIA!
    Nicolai learned AGI!

Some of the demonic energy lingered, especially around Evrard, as if it was trying to read him, and become something that he could use, but for now it would linger with him, almost out of his senses, but still there.

The group wandered out of sight, as Aeric turned to the towers before him. This was a mess. There was supposed to be a sixth recruit, but she had been late, it would probably be for the best if he kept a close eye on these two for now.
" I'm going to give it a few minutes for my Partner to bring the last recruit, just sit here and wait a minute."

The boy managed a "nice to meet you" before the sendoff of the first group.

"Ah..." Leocard was impressed by the display, watching as the first party was engulfed by some sort of energy. He wasn't sure what to make of it... but they definitely seemed to be awakening to something as Demon Busters. He couldn't say he wasn't jealous.

Nevertheless though, he did as his partner said and linked the COMPs. Hmm... but why would someone want the COMP off? He knew he sure would want the symbol of his dream with him at all times. He supposed it would be difficult to sleep with one, yes...

He could ask later. Preferably after their teacher actually answered. Leocard dug through his pockets and found his weapons... small, unassuming things, a simple pair of knuckledusters. He looped his fingers through the metal bands, gripping them in preparation for whatever fighting there might be. "Well, boss," he said lightly, "are the COMPs a sore subject or something? And while we're at it, what kind of people are the people on the way?"

Lysander was glad that his partner had decided to revoice his question; it was important, after all. It could be a matter of life an death, perhaps not now, but in the future. Perhaps he was being overly cautious, paranoid even, but as a man who had recently escaped the clutches of death, he planned to hold tightly to whatever time he had left. "Thanks." He said, nodding his head to his younger companion. Looking back up at their instructor, he elaborated slightly on his question, without voicing his silent concerns. "For example, could they get stolen from us, and would we be able to put them right back on, should we get them back?" He said, shaking his wrist slightly, noticing his COMP was looser than was comfortable. He adjusted the straps, pulling them tighter.

As for the other people, Lysander wasn't particularly worried. In fact he was glad to have another along- the other group had three people, which had left just the two of them, until this recent development. With this, he felt safer, and reassured that he'd manage, somehow, to make it through the rest of the day.

Aeric didn't have any answers for them about the COMPs besides what they could see themselves. He had been almost forcibly removed from the COMP project by people that were supposedly higher up than him, one of the original researchers. He shook his head at the idea the COMPs were a sore subject.

"I had to make sure the other group made it off safely before I could turn my focus to other topics. Now... BLACK FROST SUPPLY THEM WITH SUPPORT!"

A bizarre looking creature that sorta looked like a snowman if it was black appeared in a puff of smoke in front of Aeric, and suddenly disappeared in another puff of smoke.

The sounds of a motorcycle can be heard outside, as the two riders got off. The driver of said bike returns the bike to his soul, and heads down into the bunker, turning to make sure the trainee he drove here followed him inside.

    " And here they are."

There was a thin, lanky kid, who seemed around 17, maybe 18 by the the way his body looked, considering you couldn't see his head, since he was wearing a biker helmet beside a woman around the same age with dark brown hair.

"Hah--?!" Leocard stepped back momentarily as the black, purple-hatted snow demon briefly winked into existence. It was startling, it was large, and it was... actually rather cute for a demon. The devilish grin and talons were rather off-putting, though, and he felt as though its appearance belied its power.

Looking around, though, he didn't see any readily visible effects. Confused, he opened his mouth to speak before closing it again as two more demon busters appeared, following the loud purr of a motorbike engine.

"Oh?" He said, as a lanky guy in a helmet and a girl with dark brown hair approached. "Are you guys gonna be with us, then? It's nice to meet you..."

Lysander was slightly shocked at the sudden appearance, and disappearance of the demon, yet strangely all he could think of was how much he liked its hat. "Nice... hat." He rumbled out quietly, not talking to anything, or anyone in particular. He grabbed the sides of his own, and pulled it down more tightly over his head, the wool stretching easily. Beady eyes peered out from under the lip of the hat, darting towards the source of the quickly approaching noise. It was a motorcycle, and though one might think his hearing would be impaired by his hat, Lysander easily made out the sound of two people coming down into the bunker.

"Hello..." He said quietly to the newcomers, hands in his pockets. He considered holding out his hand; but the man had yet to take off his helmet, and the girl clearly looked ill, her skin an unhealthy shade. He looked at Leocard briefly, shooting him an inquisitive look, wondering if the boy found it strange that an apparently sick girl would even be allowed to go on a mission. Either the Demon Busters were in dire straights, or the girl was an important asset to their group.

Aeric took a good look at the illing girl in front of the duo, before he pulled her to the side, with no response or yells of disagreement from her side. He shot a glance at the Masked Rider, who simply gave a shrug.

"Since this poor girl is in poor condition, You'll have to take the man responsible for bringing her here despite that. Meet Alexander the Dullahan. He's on orders to protect you in case anything goes too far that you will likely die. Otherwise he is to keep his hands off the situation."

This Alexander man didn't take off his helmet, just extended his hand in greeting towards the two, before quickly withdrawing his comp arm, but they are getting a better look at the man.

Well, not exactly a man. His body seemed odd, almost unbearably hard to look at even with a biker suit on, as if looking through a thick fog to make out a blade of grass in the plains.

Leocard shrugged at Lysander's inquiring glance. He wasn't really in charge, so he supposed that stranger could have happened. Even ill, he couldn't readily tell what she was capable of.

But their question was evidently answered when Aeric explained the situation. So she wasn't coming with them? Hmm... The young man wondered idly what sort of person this "Alexander" was. He didn't seem to talk much...

But even token attempts at observation failed him. Just trying to look at him was a chore, and no matter how Leocard blinked or rubbed his eyes, there always remained some sort of ethereal, indescribable quality to this "dullahan." What kind of being was he, then...?

With no voice to hint at personality, or even a clear image to clue him in on what type of fighter Alexander might be, Leocard had no real clue what to expect from him. He suddenly conceived of the very odd idea of him using only a COMP to communicate, then dismissed the notion as ridiculous.

Somewhat hesitantly, he asked, "So, um... does that mean we're going to go in with this group next?"
