Appearance:
Nikolai is rather short, his height reaching somewhere around 171 centimetres and has a slight build with narrow shoulders and hips and long thin limbs. His face is a pleasant sight, with soft features, high cheekbones, thin lips, a small straight nose and clear gray eyes with long dark lashes. His slightly feminine face, in combination with his slight build, often causes people to mistake him for a girl.
His hair is a glossy black, and he keeps it loosely hanging around his face. It is parted on the side and nearly reaches his jaw, and is a little shorter in the back.
His outfit consist of a dark teal blazer worn over a gray shirt, a darker teal scarf around his neck, dark green pants and sturdy black boots.

Personality:
Nikolai comes across as a mature and slightly serious young man, maybe even a little cold and aloof to strangers, but to people he knows well he is in fact a warm and caring person. The few friends he has mean the world to him, and he goes to great lengths to help or protect them.
He sees it at his duty and purpose in life to protect and serve civilians from the demons, but his inexperienced-ness often makes him feel insecure, and sometimes causes him to make mistakes. He tries his hardest to prove himself, but is terrified of failing and losing people he cares about, due to a traumatic event in his youth. The same event has caused him to fear the topside almost to the point of a phobia, and is the reason he often doesn't want to involve others in his business, fearing they might get hurt one day because of him.
All in all, Nikolai is a warm, caring and protective person, but he has a little trouble showing it. But if people give him some time, his icy attitude will melt and he'll be a great, if maybe a little solitary, friend.
Also, due to him being of mixed East-Asian and Russian ancestry, he speaks with a slight accent and will sometimes speak with foreign words when he can't think of the English one fast enough.

Backstory:
Nikolai's family has been shaped by disaster and death. It started with his mother's parents, who were killed in the Great Destruction and left her to flee towards the third home on her own, where she met her future husband and Nikolai's father, a Russian immigrant who would lose his parents to a demon attack in the early years of the third home.
They both arrived in the third home with the first wave of refugees and soon became close friends. Twelve years later they married, and two years later their son, Nikolai, was born.

Nikolai's early youth was relatively uneventful. Noone ever expected he would turn out to be a demon buster. His parents ran a bakery, supplying the residents of the third home with bread, pastries and other baked delicacies. Young Nikolai often played on the floor of the bakery with the children of his parent's customers. It is here that he met his soon-to-be best friend, a young boy named Jason. They looked nothing alike, yet people often mistook them for brothers, seeing they were always together and incredibly close with each other. They were always running about the home, pretending they were adventurers or demon busters fighting off imaginary monsters, and fantasized about life topside. To them, going topside seemed like the ultimate adventure, despite both of their parents warning them to never go there on their own.

But, in the eyes of the young boys, rules were there to be broken. Their hunger for adventure was bigger than their sense of responsibility. The few times they had been topside, always under heavy protection from demon busters, had seemed relatively safe. None of them thought even only once that there could be dangerous demons roaming around the home.

Then, disaster struck. One day, when both boys were around age ten, they decided to sneak topside, hiding among a group of residents that was transferring to another home. To them, it was just another innocent adventure. Until they ran into a demon.

Without protection from demon busters, the boys stood no chance. The demon, sensing Nikolai's demonic aura, went straight for him and would've killed him right on the spot if it weren't for Jason. The other boy had thrown himself in the demon's path, sacrificing himself to save his friend. In the meantime a local demon buster, having been alerted by their parents about their missing children, was able to track them down. He managed to defeat the demon, but failed to save Jason. Nikolai had to watch helplessly how his friend was ripped to pieces by the demon, something that shocked him so deeply he refused to go topside ever again. Even now, eight years later, he still hasn't been topside.

The fact the demon had gone straight for Nikolai, completely ignoring the other boy, revealed his potential as a demon buster. Of course, he was still too young to begin training, not to mention his parents refused to let him out of their sight after the accident, terrified of losing their only son. But Nikolai thought differently. He felt terribly guilty about Jason's death, if it hadn't been for him his friend would probably never gone topside and had never been killed. Signing up for the demon busters was, in his eyes, the only way he could make things a little right again, and the only way he could get revenge for what happened.
