    Name: Gregory Hanks

    Gender: Male

    Age:
    12

    Hometown: Slateport City

    Occupation: Trainer (Run-Away)

Appearance: Gregory stands at about 5'6" -- inheriting his shortness from his mother. He has shaggy dark hair, covering most of his face if he doesn't tie it back. His eyes are green, vibrant with the energy to thrive and survive. He is thin, though not overly so. He doesn't have much muscular definition on his body, and overall looks like what you would expect from a run-away adolescent.

He wears a thick, insulating maroon hoodie over a tight fitting ultramarine shirt, sticking to his frame well. Though his sweater has a hood, he rarely, if ever, actually uses it. Because of Rodrick's near-constant shedding, his hoodie always has some kind-of black fur on it, making it appear unclean and unwashed. He also wears a pair of ripped-knee blue jeans, fitting them well enough. He wears a pair of worn, ragged sneakers. At one point they may have been white, but they have been stained with the color of dirt over many months of heavy use.

Personality/Motivations: He wanted to get away from his parents. He needed to. Eventually, it drove him to run away from home, hoping he would never have to set his eyes on his father again. At the current, he is attempting to build some form of pathway for himself -- though without any proper guidance in his life, he has found this a very daunting and intimidating task to handle himself. Not even Rodrick -- his Houndour -- could help him with it, close as they may be. He is very cautious, the constant neglect and abuse in his former household teaching him to be very distant from people as a whole. He is an impulsive liar, and at times feels the need to be responsible for others' actions -- even those he may or may not know. He, himself, is a very troubled individual. Sometimes, to him, it seems like there's no way out -- he had been placed in a pit too deep to climb out of. At points, he feels as though maybe it would have been better off for everyone if he were dead or had never been born at all, the immense depression sometimes overwhelming him so much all he could do for days at a time was simply to sit and cry. In regards to Pokemon battling, he is much too afraid of harming Rodrick -- the one living thing he feels he can place trust in -- severely, or even killing him some how. If the need for a battle had ever arisen (and during their escape to the Iotavi region, it did, many times), he would choose to simply run than be forced to fight. But, against trainers whom he could not turn down matches, he had to fight. While he is above average at battling with Rodrick, he is often far too hesitant in his decisions to win, causing him often to lose, and lose nonexistent money out of his empty pockets. He doesn't have any aspirations for contests either, thinking himself too broke and too badly dressed to be able to labeled a serious contestant. He doesn't think he would be very good at it, either. He always has a sense of constant guilt about him, thinking himself the cause of everyone else's misfortunes, often going out of his way to separate himself from others.

Backstory/Family: His father was a native of Hoenn, and though he was a member of Team Magma, it wasn't because he agreed with their ideals. He joined the team because he craved crime, like a meth addict looking for their next fix. Wherever his father went, crime and unlawfulness soon followed. His mother was a diligent woman -- though he never knew what she saw in his father. Maybe she didn't see anything. Maybe they stayed together -- or at least she tried to -- with his father for his sake. None of it mattered though, as his father didn't work and frequently abused his mother, more often than not leading the two to retreat from the home and more than likely spend some time (usually a week or two, depending on the circumstances), with his grandparents in Lilycove. Sometimes, when the fights got intense enough, he would simply run away from it all, often finding his way into the surrounding woods and forests of Slateport.

He didn't go to school, either, so he was constantly exposed to the violence and general gruesomeness of his father. At one point, when he thought his father might beat him senseless, he handed him a Pokeball. It wasn't a special kind -- not a Luxury Ball or anything, it was just a normal red and grey sphere. For the first few weeks of his possession of the Pokeball, he was afraid that whatever might come out would attack him, maybe it was his dad's way of indirectly getting rid of him, severing whatever ties his father had to his mother. When he did finally get the courage to open it, when a particular case had again caused him to leave into the thickets of the woods and bawl his eyes out, out came what was perhaps the most precious thing in his life at that point. It was a small Houndour -- one that was obviously a runt of its kind, barely being taller than Gregory's calves. It was a precious thing, that Houndour -- it meant the world to him. It didn't make up for his father's past transgressions, though, and in his mind, it wasn't so much a gift from his father as it was from whatever had forced him into these circumstances, whatever had made him suffer through such unloving, harsh conditions that would surely haunt him throughout his life.

A couple of years passed, the usual routines carrying on and on, seemingly without an end in sight. Eventually, he knew he had to get away from it all. He knew, that one day, his father just might lose and go so utterly mad that he would kill his own son. Slowly, he saved the little bits and pieces of money he could manage from his grandparents. He had informed them of his plan -- his plan to get away from his parents, from all of it, and even though his grandparents would have offered to lodge him and nurture him, he and they both knew their days were numbered and slowly thinning, exactly like his grandfather's hair. They had agreed to not let his mother know -- know that they were letting her only son escape into the world with nothing but a single Houndour to his name.

Before they would let him leave, though, his grandparents had pleaded with him to take a particular Pokemon egg with him. It was the offspring of their own Pokemon, Pokemon they had raised in their youths when they were still young and adventurous. They had pleaded with him to take the egg with him, and raise it and nurture it as if it were his child. He obliged them, glad to at least have one more pleasant memory in his mind.

Soon, he set out, money in his pocket as he bought the only ticket he could afford: a one-way trip to the Iotavi region. Of course, for someone as young as him to be permitted to leave on his own, he had to show them a Trainer License -- something he had obtained weeks in preparation. The process was simple enough. You only had to show that you had at least a single Pokemon to a nurse at a Pokemon Center -- or a Pokemon Lab, if your town had one. Luckily for him, he had Rodrick, the first pleasant thing in his life so far. He also had his grandparents' egg, neatly stored away in his holey backpack, one strap broken, slung over a single shoulder, as he did his best to ensure it would not be damaged.

He knew the trip itself would only take a few days, just a few short days until sweet, sweet freedom was his at last. Unfortunately for him, he had no idea where to go or what to do -- he hadn't prepared this far ahead. He had no idea where any of the towns were, he didn't know if his Trainer License would still be valid in Iotavi... All he knew was that soon, soon he wouldn't have to worry about his father ever again, and that was all that mattered.

He spent his first few weeks in Iotavi getting accommodated with the region, studying the map in the Pokemon Center for his first day off the ship. Luckily, his Trainer License was still valid, and he was still able to get the usual fares at Pokemon Centers with no charge. However, his license also meant from that point on, he would have to battle any other trainers he would encounter, and it would turn out to be quite a few, though it didn't matter to him. Even though he didn't have any Pokeballs to catch Pokemon with, or enough money to buy them with, he was satisfied with Rodrick.

Because of his lack of planning, he was often left to the whims and ideas that lead him to wander. Often times, he would battle when he was only forced, and spent much of his time wandering from town to city, occasionally stopping to rest at a Pokemon Center, though he never had many plans.
