Rika pouted, leaning back against a wall as he did so. He had been in this village for a few hours, and though he thought it would be interesting, so far it had been uneventful. Kikwi occasionally passed by, calling out to other Kikwi as they did, "Find him!" while pointing to Rika. The Kokiri still wasn't quite sure what they meant, but it was clear to him by that point they did not literally mean to find Rika. He had stumbled upon this small village in Southern Hyrule by chance while making his return to Northern Hyrule, an accidental find more than anything. To his surprise, everything in the village was completely symmetrical almost perfectly; the houses, the plants, the trees, even where the Kikwi who made up its residents stood. Upon appearing, he was quickly swarmed by a small army of Kikwi, the small, potted creatures bouncing up and down, chanting "Him! Him!" And so, they brought Rika to an isolated room, but despite his requests, none of the Kikwi seemed to answer him as to what they were doing, instead they simply repeated the same process occasionally.

It would have been easy for Rika to just leave, so he was interested in what they were doing, so he was waiting patiently for an answer. However, his rather short patience ran thin rather quickly, and he was almost ready to just walk out and leave the Kikwi, should nothing happen soon. It would be a shame if he did, as he really was interested in the origins of and reasoning behind this village. Rika didn't have the patience to wait forever, he didn't even have the patience to wait nearly as long as he had so far, so it was a wonder he was still there.

Wollo was getting along quite well with his many new friends. The Kikwi had taken a particular liking to Wollo's moustache, which was perfectly even and symmetrical, each leaf side the exact length, width, and swerviness of the other. Rika seemed a little displeased about something, which had Wollo worried, but he was having lots of fun with his new friends. Usually things in this part of Hyrule tried to eat Wollo, so it was a welcome change of pace. Unless. . . they were pretending to be his friend so they could eat him later?! No, that couldn't be it! Wollo could recognize a true friend when he saw one, and a friend of Wollo's would never eat him. At least, he had never been eaten by a friend before, and Wollo had no reason to believe otherwise. Besides, if they tried to eat him then Rika would just beat them up, he was probably way stronger than the Kikwi! With his safety reassured through rigorous thinking and planning, Wollo returned to his good times.

It was here, in this bizarrely symmetrical village, that Noelle once again found her back against the wall. Literally.

Dozens of pint-sized, bush-like creatures surrounded the girl, their tiny, unnerving arms pointed at her face, all the while screaming “It’s him! It’s him!” Even stranger still (if anything could in fact be considered stranger in such a circumstance), the creatures, which Umber had proudly informed Noelle were call “Kiwis,” stood in a perfectly symmetrical pattern before her. Noelle would have normally taken greater note of this strange behavior, had she not found herself pressed flat against one of the village’s many symmetrical houses, conveniently trapped there by the Kiwi mob. Noelle’s body shook in fear as the girl took stock of her situation. What she had believed to be a simple scouting mission, hoping to resupply on dwindling food and practically nonexistent water, Noelle instead found herself at the center of a living nightmare.

The Kiwis closest to Noelle began grabbing viciously at her hands, their screams now an incoherent cacophony. The girl yelped, pulling herself free and out of reach. “Umber!” Noelle cried, her voice ragged with fear, “You never told me they would want to eat me!”
A dull, brownish-red light danced lazily in front of Noelle’s face. “Oh no-no-no Noelle, no-no-no indeed! Kiwis do not eat the fleshies, no-no!” His voice dripped of both condescension and insanity. “I think, I think the Kiwis want you to quick-follow them, yes I do yes I do.” Noelle’s breath caught in her throat. Follow them? Follow them where? It seemed ludicrous, and foolhardy to boot. And yet… Umber had never been wrong before. Noelle hesitated for an instant, the sound of her own heart heavy in her ears, before taking a single, ginger step forward. The thunderous roar died, only to be replaced a moment later with cries of “Come! Follow! Come! Follow!” as the Kiwi’s turned and began hobbling away with a frenzied determination. Years of instinct screamed wildly to run, to forsake this place, but Noelle dismissed the thought. Umber was right, they clearly wished to show her, well, something. Whatever it was, she thought to herself, it better be important.

Wollo looked around, his happy, playful look turning to confusion as the Kikwi playing with him suddenly stopped, running outside in a straight line. Rika glanced up as he saw the Kikwi march out, the thunderous chanting becoming louder and louder, bouncing throughout the room and vibrating the air. "Guess something happened." Rika called over to Wollo, a sly grin slipping across his face. Finally something interesting was happening, he didn't have to sit around any longer. Bringing himself to his feet, Rika made his way over to the exit just as the noise began to die down. Hopefully he didn't miss it.

As he exited, he saw a small army of Kikwi marching towards him from about twenty feet away, their tiny legs hobbling and stumbling forward as they kept their strange formation, a taller girl in the middle. As soon as Rika's eyes caught this girl, their eyes made contact, Rika felt something in him change. He wasn't quite sure what it was, or if he even completely noticed it, but he felt some sort of connection this girl, as if he would be unable to leave her side, yet not in the way that gave him butterflies in his stomach. It was strange and abnormal, not like a connection based on their feelings or reliance on each other, but on a more subconscious level, as if she was somehow required for him to function.

That was when he noticed her unique features. While she was dressed in a traditional female Kokiri tunic, it was stained and torn, years of living in the wilds showing its wear on her garb. Her thighs were rough and bark-like, similar to her Deku Scrub, her hair a mess of leaves and vines, her eyes nothing more than a cold, black stare. While her clothing, height, and vaguely child-like appearance all suggested she was a Kokiri, Rika was almost astounded by her otherwise monstrous appearance, and most importantly, incredibly drawn in and intrigued. That wasn't the only thing he was intrigued in, however.

Some of the Kikwi began to chant once more, "Him! Found him!" as they swarmed around Rika's feet, similar to the ones around Noelle's, creating an equal number of Kikwi that swarmed both Rika and Noelle. The Kikwi all seemed incredibly happy by this revelation. "So. . . what are you guys even doing?" Rika questioned, looking down at the Kikwi curiously. He was rather intrigued by the girl, but he had been waiting for hours to discover what the Kikwi were talking about, and he wanted an answer.

The strange creatures had quickly surrounded Noelle, forcing her into the middle of their symmetrical formation. Their frenzied feet moved surprisingly quick, necessitating a brisk pace on the part of Noelle. Meanwhile, Umber took shelter in the Kokiri's hood, stretching out as if it were a hammock. “U-Um,” she stammered, glancing around, “w-where exactly, um, are we headed?” A cry of “Him! Him!” rang through the crowd, but nothing more. Noelle narrowed her brow, the sudden realization washing over her: they had been calling her a “him” all this time. Had the Kiwis mistook her for someone else? Her hands began to shake as she imagined how anyone could mistake her for another. Was there perhaps someone else here in this village like her, cursed as such? Noelle’s heart beat faster at this thought.

As they rounded another bend, she opened her mouth, hoping perhaps Umber had an answer. However, before she could spear, something caught her eye and the question died in her throat. Ahead of them, a different creature, one uncomfortably familiar to the girl, exited from a house. As “his” bright green eyes locked with her gaze, Noelle felt her body lurch to a stop. Her tremble of anticipation had quickly become one of terror, vibrating her entire body. There was no mistaking the boy that stood in front of her. Deep, forest green hair adorned his head, his youthful face that of a Hylian child, though she did, for a moment, note his unusual garb. Here, countless leagues from the forest of her youth, stood another Kokiri. Noelle’s vision began to swim as countless memories best left forgot suddenly bursting forth from the depths of her mind. Noelle took a step back, her mouth falling agape. The boy spoke suddenly, seemingly to the Kiwis that had gathered at his feet. His voiced grated against her ears, the voices of her peers echoing with it.

Noelle could take no more. A terrified, primal scream escaped her lips, the ground rushing up to meet her face before darkness washed across her vision.

As Noelle fell to the the ground, the many Kikwi under her scattered around in an attempt to act as a cushion, the Kokiri falling on their many large, squishy, bulbous, plant-like appendages. The Kikwi screamed and cried in shock and fear, letting out cries of "Him! Him! Not him!" as they ran around like chickens with their heads cut off, but in strangely organized patterns. As Rika witnessed this, he glared down at the Kikwi suspiciously. "What did you do?" He demanded, to which the panicked Kikwi called out cries of, "Him! Him!" and many let out "Not me! Not me!" They followed it up with, "It him! It him!" Rika couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in confusion. This was starting to get a little disorienting. Were they talking about him. . .er, Rika? It was true her reaction seemed to go from timid to panicked as soon as she saw him, but what reason would she have for that? Rika wasn't exactly thrilled to see her either, but he wasn't about to collapse over it. Perhaps she just didn't like Kokiri either? It would make sense, considering how they treated others who were different, and she certainly was.

As the Kikwi ran in a panic, some cried out to Rika, "Him! Him! What do him?!" They chanted to the Kokiri as he groaned, rubbing his temples. This was starting to get a little obnoxious. "Just. . . take her inside and lay her on something, she should recover momentarily." The Kikwi all seemed to nod and chirp at his orders, crying out things like, "Yes yes! Do say say him!" and "Take sit sit him!". For how unintelligent the Kikwi were, they seemed awfully unified. "And don't do anything to disturb her, Kikwi! Let me know if she wakes up!" Rika called out, to which many responded, "Yes! Him know know!"

With that done, Rika turned back to the Kikwi. "So what are you guys talking about?" Rika inquired, to which a Kikwi called out, "Need him! Need HIM!" He enunciated differently on the second him, causing the impression they were meant to be distinguished. From what they were calling, they must mean him and that girl. . . "But why?" Rika inquired, to which many Kikwi called out, some at the same time and others sequentially, "Need him! Help me!" They bounced up and down as they spoke. They definitely needed help. It looked like they required that girl before he would learn anything of value, however. ". . .I'm gonna go looking around. Tell me if she gets up." Rika ordered the Kikwi before he started to walk off. The Kikwi bounced excitedly, with nods and cries of, "Yes yes! Him know know not sit sit!"

Meanwhile, Wollo stared as a small legion of Kikwi shuffled into the room, carrying a small, scary looking unconscious girl on their back. What did Rika do? Wollo looked on uncomfortably as they propped her onto a bed, taking excruciating care to not cause her any sort of discomfort or rough movement, to a far too unnecessary degree. Hopefully she wouldn't be hungry when she awoke.

Umber grumbled quietly, pulling himself free from the tangled hood. A peaceful, dreamless sleep had only just settled over him moments before Noelle’s frightened scream pierced the air. Her subsequent fall and transportation by the bush creatures had managed to thoroughly twist Umber’s hidey-hole, and it had taken him longer than expected to reorientation himself. Upon emerging, he found that Noelle’s seemingly lifeless body had been placed gently upon an aptly sized bed. Surrounding the two of there were roughly half a dozen of the “Kiwi” creatures, chittering quietly among themselves, as if they feared to wake the girl.

Umber clucked his tongue, wholly annoyed with the present situation. “SCRAM!” The single, rage filled word scarcely had time to leave his lips before a ball of shadow, slightly larger than Noelle’s head, connected with the closest creature, knocking it completely off its feet. The others squealed in fear as their comrade somersaulted backwards, and all but one other dispersed uniformly out the door. Curiously, the remaining creature had instead chosen to throw itself backwards, directly mirroring Umber’s unfortunate target. The Fairy stared at the two motionless lumps, unable to decipher the downright bizarre behavior. Umber shook his head, having neither the interest nor the patience for these creatures, and instead turned back towards the room.

The room was, for the most part, non-descript, save for a sense of unnerving symmetry. And, of course, Wollo, cowering in the corner directly across from the Fairy. Umber’s face contorted in disgust, suddenly realizing the cause of Noelle’s collapse. “You!” he hissed, moving slowly towards the Octorock. “You did this, did this, didn’t you, didn’t you?! I’ll teach-” Umber’s sudden outburst was cut short by the sounds of stirring. Noelle groaned as she sat, wincing as she touched the spot where her face had met the ground. The Fairy wheeled around, rushing to the Kokiri’s side. “Oh goodness, thank goodness thank goodness.” All fury was gone from Umber’s voice, replaced instead with the usual sickly sweet condescension. “Are you alright? Are you alright?” Noelle nodded her head gently as she turned her body to stand. As she did, her eyes fell upon Wollo. “Oh.” An embarrassed silence filled the room for a breath. Then, she smiled weakly at the Octorock, and asked “Um, who are you?”

The Kokiri let out a scream of frustration. Despite all of his efforts, nothing was working. While walking around the town, Rika decided to investigate the perimeter of the town. Upon doing so, however, he was met face to face with some invisible, immovable force preventing him from going any further. Tracing it, it seemed to circle the entire village, preventing any form of exit. Rika's assaults against the wall of force appeared fruitless as well; his spells and scythe swipes passed through the wall as if it were completely clear, and only his physical body was held back. It was incredibly frustrating. Rika knew something about this place was odd, but for him to be trapped here? With a groan, Rika took a few steps back from the blockade. For now, he would just have to pry more information out of the Kikwi, and maybe check on the girl while he was at it.

Wollo cowered as Umber's voice echoed through the room, his harsh, anger-driven words shaking Wollo to his core as one of the Kikwi was assaulted, flying back. The other Kikwi ran out of the room in a panicked hurry, fearful of what may happen to them. As Umber called out to Wollo, the Octorok visibly jumped, completely stopping the crawl towards the door he was attempting. He was truly about to be eaten, and it wasn't even by the girl. It was by the terrifying umber light that he would be eaten. Could he even fit in its stomach? Wollo was terrified to find out, but he was going to, this was it for him.

. . . As the girl started to stir, Wollo didn't notice Umber stop his assault, the Octorok shivering with its eyes shut, curled into a ball- which is to say the same as he normally is. It was only when Noelle spoke, and Wollo realized the voice of someone different, that he slowly opened his eyes. "Uhh. . . Wollo. . ." The Octorok slowly drooled out, his body still shaking. He had to be brave though, he's almost been eaten by bigger things than the light or her, though he mostly wasn't due to Rika. . .

"Uhh. . .No eat. . ." Wollo hesitantly said, almost stopping himself even more-so than usual as if he feared she would react negatively to him not wanting to be eaten. "Uhh. . .Friend?" The Octorok finally asked. Perhaps she was a friend, though the light certainly wanted to eat him. Maybe if she was his friend, she would beat up the bad light and stop it from eating him.

Noelle couldn’t help but smile as the poor little Octorock spoke. It seemed to be confused, and possibly slow, as wild creatures are wont to be. First introducing itself as “Wollo,” the creature then seemed to follow up hesitantly with a request for food, or so it seemed to Noelle, as well as an inquisitive “Friend?” The poor thing must have become trapped in the village, unable to find itself food, she thought to herself. Gently placing a hand on her chest, Noelle smiled before replying “Friend.”

Pushing off the bed onto unsteady legs, the girl turned to Umber. “Did… anything happen while I was out?” she asked, quizzically. “No no, two poor Kiwis fainted, yes they did, yes they did, but nothing else, nothing else.” The Fairy bobbed up and down as it spoke, a faint edge to his voice. Noelle furrowed her brow, confused. She had been certain that she had seen another Kokiri emerge from this very house, and yet he was perplexingly absent from the room. Had she just imagined him? Perhaps a trick of the light, or the weakness of hunger? Noelle shook her head at the thought. It was highly unlikely that she would imagine such a vivid image. The question was, then, where could the other Kokiri have gone? “Maybe you know!” she said suddenly, turning to Wollo. Noelle knelt down close as she spoke, her voice soft and gentle. “Have you seen another, like… like me, but not “like” me? Do you… do you understand?” The words stung as she said them, but it didn’t matter right now. She had to find this mysterious Kokiri, and Wollo was the key.

The Octorok couldn't help but smile- which is to say, his face didn't move in the slightest- as Noelle responded by calling herself his friend. The light was super spooky, but she was nice and pretty. Wollo was happy to have her as a friend. He couldn't help but flinch defensively as Umber spoke up, withdrawing his body as much as he could to cower at the fairy's voice; which is to say, he did not really move in the slightest as he was a large pink ball. He began to calm down as Noelle spoke again, however, though her quick outburst caused the Octorok to bounce back slightly, startled by her words. As she continued with her questions, however, the Octorok stared at her confusedly. "Uhh. . . like. . .? Like. . . Wollo. . . Wollo like friend. . ." He responded, believing he had answered her question. Then, he remembered her first question, before the like. "Uhh. . . Wollo see scary light. . . pretty friend. . . Rika. . . and bush." He paused between words, as if thinking over who he had seen. "Uhh. . . Bush make Rika mad, so Rika walk away. . ." Boy, Wollo sure was happy to have a new friend, especially one who could talk to him! Rika usually didn't like the people that could talk to him for some reason, but surely he would like this nice friend, right?

If Noelle could blush, Wollo’s words would have turned her red as an Ember Seed. Not once in the countless decades she had lived had anyone, or anything for that matter, referred to her as “pretty.” This was no time for such thoughts however, for she had gotten her answer. While it seemed Wollo had not fully understood her question – he had assumed she meant “like” in terms of friendship, or so it sounded – it did seem as if he knew this mysterious boy, this “Rika.” Presumptuous as it was to assume he and the Kokiri boy to be one and the same, the situation was too perfect. The boy had obviously been in this house, and so Wollo would have had to see him. Furthermore, a creature such a Wollo would scarcely last a day in wilds, meaning Rika must be his master. And a creature as sweet as Wollo must have an equally pleasant master, or so one would assume... Noelle stood slowly, her legs shaking. Why was she overthinking this so? This ‘Rika’ was just another Kokiri, obviously just like all the rest... and yet, something inside her would not believe it. For an instant, when their gazes had met, she could see something behind his eyes. Something she had seen before, reflecting back up from her own.

“Wollo,” she said, slowly and deliberately, “can you take me to this ‘Rika’?” Umber, shocked at Noelle’s cavalier request, gave the creature no time to reply. “No no no Noelle, no no! We cannot trust, cannot trust this… this thing!” Noelle was quiet for a moment, before replying flatly “We’re going with him, Umber, and that is final.” Her voice was thick with determination, and Umber sighed, knowing full well he could not convince her otherwise, not now. His silence the only answer she wanted, Noelle turned back and smiled down at Wollo. “Please excuse my friend Wollo, he is very… protective of me. Now, if you don’t mind, let us go find Rika.” Not waiting for Wollo’s response, she turned and made her way towards the door, her confidence belying the grow pit of anxiety festering in her stomach.

Though he flinched when Umber yelled, clearly scared of his presence, Wollo slowly nodded as Noelle asked him to bring her to Rika. "Uhh. . . ok. . ." He responded. To tell the truth, Wollo actually had no idea where Rika currently was, other than 'somewhere', so finding him would be difficult. Such a thought never crossed the Octorok's mind, however, as he began to waddle out of the hut. As they did so, they would hear the target of their search, his voice pounding loudly through the small village.

"Get back here and tell me what's going on, you damn Kikwi!" Rika shouted, snatching up a Kikwi by the bulb as it attempted to run. Holding it up at face level and staring at it, the Kikwi flailed its arms and legs pointlessly, though otherwise didn't seem to struggle and be in pain. "You guys have been screwing with me for hours, and now I can't leave. So why don't you tell me what's going on?" The Kikwi flailed in place for a few moments- a Kikwi mimicked its actions on the ground behind Rika-, crying out, "Him! Him! Me no know know! Want know know, speak speak chief boss!" Rika glared at the Kikwi suspiciously. They had a chief? Why the hell didn't they take him to the chief in the first place, instead of making him sit around for hours? These guys were getting annoying.

That was when he saw Wollo pop up, beside him the feral Kokiri girl that had collapsed. At least she hadn't died, though Rika really didn't want to deal with a Kokiri right now- or ever, really, but especially not now- when he was trying to figure out what was up with this Kikwi. It seemed as though Wollo had been talking to her, though, judging by how they were together, so there was no avoiding it. Gently setting the Kikwi down, it over-dramatically collapsed to the ground, before leaping back up not even a second after, the Kikwi behind Rika imitating it perfectly. Bringing himself from his knees to his feet, Rika somewhat bemusedly called out, "Oh, you're up?"

As he did so, the two Kikwi began bouncing in place and energetically thrusting their hands up at Rika, shouting, "Him! Him!" Then, they bounced over towards Noelle, repeating the same process.

Noelle had barely taken a step from the hut when she heard the target of her search. Her body stiffened as she turned her head towards the sound of anger. The boy, Rika, had caught one of the creatures in his grasp and was now shouting at it, an edge of irritation in his voice. Umber edged himself slowly toward Noelle, whispering, “Careful, careful, he seems… not okay, no-no-no not okay at all. A little, a little crazy.” Noelle scowled at the Fairy’s harsh words, her gaze locked tight on the boy. His actions were peculiar, to say the least. The Kokiri Noelle had known would have treated creatures such as these with the utmost respect, no matter the situation. Furthermore, the boy had yet to harm Noelle, despite her… more monstrous appearance. She narrowed her brow further. Perhaps it was all a ploy? Or worse, perhaps he had poisoned her in her sleep…

Noelle’s muscles tightened instinctively as Rika seemed to finally notice their presence, her hand resting gently on the pouch of Smoke Seeds she wore on her hip. He called to her as he stood, his tone still carrying the edge from earlier. Noelle stood frozen for a moment, anxiety strangling her voice. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She tried a second time, but still her voice would not cooperate. “Please, please excuse my friend, please. She is shy, shy, very shy.” Umber’s voice rang out suddenly, startling Noelle. Her head snapped to the side as her mind raced to comprehend the situation. “Uh… um, I um, I’m, um, Noelle,” she stammered, shifting her gaze slowly back towards Rika. Embarrassment clung warmly to Noelle’s skin as she stared again at the boy, her eyes wide, hands trembling. A single Smoke Seed sat cradled in her palm as she prepared herself for the worst.

As the girl slowly mumbled out her name, Rika stared at her blankly. Calling her shy was an understatement; first she collapses at the mere sight of someone else, and now she can't even speak her own name? It had to be something more severe than that, though Rika had little difference in asking to find out what. The presence of a fairy, at least, confirmed to Rika that she was certainly a Kokiri. She finally managed to spit out her name, to which Rika responded somewhat disinterestedly, "Oh. . . I'm Rika. You met Wollo already." He didn't particularly have any interest in giving her his name, but since she had offered hers, there was no harm in telling her his. Noelle, though? It was kind of an ironic name, if you thought about it.

Now that she was up and awake, though, she could prove herself useful by testing a hypothesis of Rika's. "Say, Noelle. . ." He called out to the girl. "Could you leave?" He requested, before realizing that probably sounded far ruder than he intended. Though he would prefer if she left, his question wasn't meant to be so harsh. Clarifying, Rika added, "Like, try to leave the village. I tried to, but there's some impassable force preventing me from stepping out of a certain distance away from the huts. I want to test if anyone else is able to leave. You too, Wollo." Hopefully she would oblige, and not pass out again. He wouldn't be able to learn anything if that happened, unless he carried her body to the exit. Could an unconscious body pass through? Rika pondered the possibilities for a moment, but decided it would be too difficult to test and probably would not result in a success anyway.

Noelle’s muscles relaxed slightly as Rika introduced himself, seemingly unfazed by, and unafraid of, the girl. Still, she thought as her hand gripped the lone Smoke Seed tight, there was no way to know his true intentions, or skill. Regardless, Noelle narrowed her brow at Rika’s bored tone, somewhat offended by his lackluster reply. It had been Rika who started the conversation, and yet now she wasn’t worth the effort? Noelle’s cheeks puffed with anger slightly, her mind unable to rationalize why she was suddenly so irritated with the boy.

There was little time to ponder this however, as her annoyance turned to bewilderment as Rika spoke again. "Could you leave?" The word’s echoed in Noelle’s head as she felt her face flushed hot. The girl’s hands began shaking again, only this time out of anger, and she saw her vision go red. The boy pipped up suddenly, clarifying his previous statement, though he gave no indication if it was in part due to Noelle’s reaction. “…Leave the… village?” she repeated slowly, unable to process for a moment. All her rage disappeared in an instant, and she felt her arms go numb. “I… I haven’t… tried yet, um, let me… let me go try, I guess?”

She turned unusually quickly, making for a clearing in the trees at the village’s edge. Noelle’s mind raced, trying to piece together the strange Kokiri boy as she strolled forward. He… confused her. She was unsure how to take him, with his lack of tact and bored attitude. Lost in thought, Noelle hurried toward the clearing without hesitation. The moment she reached the edge of the village however, she found her body colliding with something unseen, knocking her off her feet. Noelle shook her head, stars dancing before her eyes. She stared for a moment as her heart sank. It seemed what the boy had said was true. They were trapped here.

Rika trailed behind the girl as she strolled past the huts, eager to see the result of his query. As she slammed into the wall, Rika nodded, his theory confirmed. "I see, you're just the same as me, then." He tapped his hand against the wall as he spoke, as if to prove his words. "Okay Wollo, now you try." He ordered the Octorok. Wollo nervously stepped up beside Rika, and shut his eyes. His body trembling with fear, the Octorok took a step forward.

Then another step forward. Then another step forward. Then another step forward. Then another step forward. Then another step forward. Then another step forward.

"Okay Wollo, you can stop, you've already passed the barrier!" Rika called out, causing the Octorok to jump in surprise, open his eyes, and turn around to see there was about a ten-foot gap between himself and Rika. The Octorok waddled back, his body pink with embarrassment, so nothing was different from normal. "I'm surprised, Wollo, you can pass through." Rika commented, pausing to think about it. Why could neither Rika nor Noelle pass through? Was it because they were Kokiri that they couldn't? Or rather, was it because Wollo was an Octorok that he could? "Perhaps it's because we're Kokiri. . ." Rika spoke his comments aloud, before turning to the Kikwi that had followed behind them. "You two Kikwi, you try too."

They let out a cry of, "Me try try! Me try try!" and as if on cue, the Kikwi charged recklessly at the wall, leaping about a foot into the air and colliding with the invisible barrier, sliding down to the ground harmlessly. A moment later, another Kikwi followed behind him, repeating the same actions. "Peculiar, so they can't either. . . Kikwi, take me to your chief, I wanna know what's going on." The Kikwi bounced up, shaking off the seemingly harmless impact they had just received- it was likely absorbed by the bulb on their back-, crying out, "Me take take speak speak chief boss!" They began to bounce off in the direction of the chief's hut. Rika began to follow them, before calling out to Noelle, "You're trapped here too, you might want to investigate as well." He didn't expect her to be of any help, but for once the Kokiri was not the most annoying thing he was dealing with right now.

Noelle watched with a furrowed brow as Wollo passed unhindered through the invisible barrier. Her brow furrowed further as the Kikwi he called failed to pass the barrier, as they had. If it was as Rika had suggested, that the barrier prevented their passage because they were Kokiri, why then did it prevent the Kikwi from moving through as well? Noelle pondered this mystery for a moment, before Rika’s voice suddenly brought her back to reality. “Uh, y-yeah,” she stammered, her eyes on the ground. “I, um, I just want to check s-something quick. It’ll… it’ll just take a moment.”

Turning back towards to barrier, Noelle hunched over, whispering quietly to her hood. “Umber, I need you to do something for me. I need you to investigate the whole village, and tell me if there is anything out of sorts, okay?” The fairy crawled out of Noelle’s hood slowly before moving close to her ear. “Are you sure-sure? This Kokiri could be dangerous, dangerous yes yes.” Noelle shook her head, her eyes closed, before replying. “I don’t think he will hurt me. He… he hasn’t yet, and I don’t think he has a reason to… I hope.” The Fairy was silent for a moment, before sighing. “Fine, fine. I will quick-quick look, then come find you, yes find you.” Without waiting for a reply, the brown light shot into the air, zipping and darting erratically away, disappearing into the village proper.

Taking a deep breath, Noelle stood up before hurrying after Rika and the Kikwi. Anxiety clawed at Noelle’s insides as she caught up to the Kokiri, though she did her best to push the feeling down. “So, um…” she stammered, hoping some small-talk would help ease her nerves, “why are you here? I-I mean, uh, what brings you so far from… from the forest?” Noelle’s voice caught in her throat as she finished, realizing too late how presumptuous her question was. Her heart racing, Noelle glanced sideways at Rika, hoping he hadn’t been offended by her prying.

As Rika waited for Noelle to do. . . whatever it was she was doing, the Kokiri groaned impatiently in his mind. He had regretted inviting her to come with them, if he was going to have to wait for her. Luckily for him, she wasn't long, and quickly rejoined the group. As they followed behind the Kikwi to wherever they were going, Noelle seemed to pip up with a question. The way she worded her question grained against Rika's mind somewhat, but it was how he expected, so he was not too surprised. ". . . I stumbled upon it on the way back to the north. Of course, I chose to investigate, then these Kikwi swarmed me and started chanting 'him' at me. I was curious so I followed them, but they just made me sit it a room for several hours while they did nothing." The Kokiri complained, glaring at the Kikwi as he did though they didn't seem to offer any sort of reply.

Pausing for a moment, he added, ". . . I suppose you wouldn't understand this, but I don't live in the forest." Though her appearance was vastly different from other Kokiri, it seemed to Rika that in the end, she was the same as the others; a Kokiri shackled to the forest, where even the idea of stepping away demanded questioning in of itself.

Noelle’s eyes first narrowed, then widened, as Rika spoke, her mind reeling with questions. Nothing he said made sense to her. Silence hung in the air as they walked, broken only by the occasional squeal of a Kikwi. Another Kokiri that had abandoned the forest… was such a thing truly possible? And what did he mean by “the north?” There were so many things she wanted to ask the boy, but where to start? Noelle tilted her head slowly, her gaze shifting from the ground to Rika. The boy looked as if he was disappointed, but at what, Noelle knew not. Perhaps it was possible that he too was alone, looking for someone, anyone, who would be his companion? Noelle’s heart skipped a beat at the thought, and before her rational mind could stifle her words, she blurted out, “R-really? Y-you don’t live there either? Wow, I n-never thought I’d meet another Kokiri l-like me!”

Noelle’s hands clasped over her mouth as she stopped dead, her eyes bulged in horror. “Oh n-no, no I didn’t mean it like that!” she stammered, half muffled, before Rika could reply. “I-I didn’t mean to imply we were anything alike! I’m… I’m sorry…” Noelle’s voiced trailed off as her gaze dropped to her feet, cheeks burning with embarrassment. She had surely offended him in her excitement, and now she would pay the price.

Annoying. She was right, they were certainly nothing alike, and Rika was almost glad another Kokiri knew their place. Yet, if she was not from the forest, then from where? Surely she could not be from any town, with the, frankly, horrific physical make-up she possessed. Was she a feral child, living in the wilds and fighting off Ganon's forces and the monsters that roamed Southern Hyrule day by day to survive? She didn't look particularly intimidating or strong, so Rika doubted the validity of that theory, but he knew magic could surprise many. If it were any other creature, Rika would be burning with interest, yet the fact that it was a Kokiri almost muddled it, and made it feel more like a chore than fulfilling a burning scientific curiosity. It would be a lie to say he was not still curious, however, and it would be something he would have to suffer through to learn more. She didn't seem particularly educated, however, as shown by her confused reactions to what he was saying. Rika would have to dumb down his vocabulary for her.

Rika paused for a moment, playing with his questions in his mind- and whether he should ask one at all- before slowly speaking, ". . . Then, if not the forest, where are you from? Are you a subject of Ganon's torture? Or perhaps. . .further south?" Rika mused. The horrific body mutilations she possessed would be in line with Ganon's forces- he would not put it past one of the many despicable wizards to use her as a magical test dummy for their spells. Rika was curious about that as well, but he feared she would actually die if he brought attention to them as of now, and then he would learn nothing. That would be something to speak of later.

Noelle’s gaze snapped to Rika as he spoke, a look of confusion painted across her face. Rika’s tone was softer than she had expected, his words those of curiosity, rather than condemnation. This was not the reaction she had expected to receive, particularly from another of her kind. Should she tell him the truth, would he even understand? Doubt clouded her thoughts, her mind swimming with the memories of her past. Distrust was all she had ever known, and it had kept her alive this long. Yet, a glimmer of belief had begun to fester in her heart, a realization that truly terrified Noelle. For the first time in her life, she felt a semblance of ease. She would tell him, she decided. And if she had to, Noelle was prepared to kill him.

An awkward silence hung in the air as her mind scrambled to find the right words. “I-I don’t know what a “Ganon” is,” she began, her voice still somewhat unsteady, “but I am q-quite certain I have never met one. This…” she motioned to herself, “this was my own doing…” Noelle trailed off for a moment, her eyes wet and glossy. “Umber was my only friend… the others… t-treated me as if I were a monster. Sometimes, they’d just beat me with words… other times, it was with s-sticks and stone.” Noelle reached up slowly, pulling down the shoulder of her tunic a touch. A deep scar ran perpendicular to her neck, different from the usual blemishes that seemed to mar her “flesh.” Instead, it looked as if her wood-like skin had been purposefully hewn away by force.

“We left the others long ago, choosing instead to live alone at the forest edge. That is, unti-” Noelle’s words were cut off suddenly, interrupted by a unanimous chorus of “We here! We here!” In front of them stood two huts, not unlike the others, save for the fact that they were twice, maybe even three times, the size. Her previous thought was lost as she looked between the two buildings, confused. “Wait… w-which one do we go in…?” Noelle looked to the Kikwi for answers, but they just repeated their declaration. She glanced back to Rika, hoping he would have the answer.
