Name: Aedric, son of Hector of Saria

    Epithet(s): "the Bastard", "the Southron"

    Race: Hylian

    Age: 20

    Gender: Male

Place of Origin: Southern Hyrule, near Saria; Residing in Northern Hyrule since the age of 7

    Residence:
    Agricultural Estate:
Aedric's primary residence is a countryside villa far from the bother of urban life in Castle Town. At the center of the complex is a building used as housing by the owner of the estate, a manor set on a rectangular plan, with a front gate at a face of the rectangle facing southeast, and under a column-lined portico. The gate opens onto a central courtyard around the rest of the residence is built, with doors on the first floor of the building opening onto another portico running around the edge of the courtyard. Much of the structure of the manor is constructed of a mix of brick, stone, and wood, and is decorated with a lining of plaster and paint. The main structure includes a number of facilities including bed chambers, privies, a kitchen, common room, and offices for the owner of the estate (Aedric). Of particular importance to Aedric is the library that he keeps in his home. He makes a dedicated effort to maintain a large, wide-ranging collection of scrolls, tomes, and books both for more leisurely self-education and for reference should the need arise as the result of some future task.

The villa complex also includes storehouses where produce from the fields can be stockpiled and prepared to be taken to market in one of Hyrule's nearby towns. Aedric's store rooms include granaries for the stockpiling of grain, as well as houses for curing and storing meat. Additional storage space is dedicated to the holding of barrels of wine, which serves as one of Aedric's two more profitable assets, along with flax for production of linen. Storage space is, naturally, also included for these supplies of flax.

The third and final component of Aedric's villa is the housing for his farm hands. Small plots of land are allocated to the families of his hired workers, on which they have small residences of their own. These workers tend the fields on Aedric's estate and pay rents by giving him a share of the crops they produce. As these crops provide for the sustenance of Aedric's own household, as well as for his incomes as he is able to sell excess flax, wine, and corn, this payment in produce serves as payment of rents without the need for a direct exchange of currency. The workers are allowed to keep much of their own grain and meat, to provide for their own families, while the majority of the wine and flax produced on Aedric's estate is given to him. As compensation for this work, for which his farmers are given no produce, Aedric pays a small wage in Rupees to each worker. Aedric's workers are not serfs; they are free tenants.

The whole of the estate is relatively modest by the usual standards of much of Hyrule's land-owning aristocracy, covering only an area of about 220 hectares. Far from Hyrule's beating heart in Castle Town, Aedric's estate is located near the eastern edge of Lanayru Province, between the latitudes of the cities of Mido and Darunia, and west of Lake Hylia, putting it relatively close to the shore of the lake and the borders of the Lost Woods. The fields of the estate, worked by farm hands rather than the land-lord, himself (though when home, Aedric is known to frequently work his own fields beside his hired hands), are largely dedicated to three main crops: corn (a more archaic form simply referring to wheat, or grain in general), flax, and grapes. Relatively small portions of land are used for other purposes, such as pastures for animals, orchards and vineyards for fruits other than grapes, or fields for other vegetables.

Grapes grown on Aedric’s estate are used to produce wine, which can be sold at the marketplace for profit. Similarly, flax fiber is used to weave linen, which can then be sold across Hyrule, as linen is widely sought-after for clothing, sails on some maritime vessels, and to produce non-metal armor components for Hyrule’s troops.

    Equipment:
    Weapons:
Longsword: Aedric's primary weapon is a sword given to him by his adoptive father, Basil Darunios, a wealthy Hylian landowner whose family commissioned the smiths of Goron City to forge the sword some years prior to Ganon's invasion of the south. With no surviving heirs save one adopted son, Basil passed the heirloom on to Aedric, so that it might serve him as it was meant to serve the sons of the house of Darunios.

The sword, dubbed Storm, is a longsword of a form frequently dubbed a "bastard sword," designed for use with one hand or two. The weapon is some 121 centimeters in length, with a hilt approximately 20 centimeters in length, with the length from the hilt to the tip of the blade representing the remaining 101. The weapon weighs approximately 1.3 kilograms overall.

The blade of this weapon is of a straight-edged, very gently tapered design, generally conforming to the style of a Type XVIa sword in the Oakshott Typology. Overall, the blade is designed for cutting blows, where the point is more gently tapered, allowing greater utility as a thrusting weapon. Contributing to its cutting and piercing power is the craft and quality of the steel from which it is forged. Storm's blade is crafted from fine Goron steel mixed with mirror silver, worked by experienced Goron smiths in the forges of Death Mountain. Its blade, therefore, possesses exceptional strength and a deadly sharp edge, worthy of Goron craft, and possesses the ability to turn back magical threats. The steel itself takes on an appearance much like that of Wootz steel or Damascus steel, with a sort of swirling pattern formed by bands of cementite within the steel matrix as a result of Goron forging methods and of the composition of the metal ore used. The flat of the blade incorporates a sort of triple fuller, with one large fuller running up the center of the blade, flanked by a smaller fuller on either side. The narrow, shallower fullers on either side end approximately halfway along the length of the blade, while the middle fuller continues until it ends about three quarters of the way to the tip of the blade. The tip of the blade is of a distal type, where the thickness of the blade becomes thinner the last several centimeters to the point, to make for a superior thrusting weapon.

Storm's hilt is of a cruciform style, crafted of somewhat darker steel than the blade. The grip is gently tapered, with an inverted waist form to allow a more comfortable grip with one or both hands. The grip is wrapped in a sleeve of brown leather, and capped at the bottom with a large, faceted plum-style pommel. At the center of the guard are triangular ecussons along the base of the blade, intended to help lock the weapon properly into its scabbard. The guard itself is a straight piece of steel, with each side gently tapering off before ending with small, bulb-shaped finial tips.

Storm is carried in a durable scabbard crafted from two pieces of oak measured and carved to appropriately house the shape of the sword's blade. The pieces of oak are further held together by leather binding, and the whole structure is encased in a fitted sheath of leather, fitting around the outer and inner surfaces of the scabbard, stitched in place, and bound to the wood by a silver cap at the point of the scabbard and another around the opening.

Parrying Dagger: In addition to his finely crafted longsword, Aedric carries a lightweight sword-hilt dagger on his belt beside Storm's scabbard. His dagger is crafted with a comparatively long, tapered blade, with an overall weight of about 600 grams, or 0.6 kilograms. Unlike many daggers intended more specifically for quick, thrusting strikes and little else, this dagger is more akin to a parrying dagger of a form with a disproportionately large cruciform guard affording it greater utility as an off-hand weapon. As the label suggests, a parrying dagger would be most useful, in such a role as an off-hand weapon, in being a quick, maneuverable tool for warding off enemy blows while the user can wield his primary weapon in his dominant hand. Though designed as an auxiliary combat weapon, Aedric's dagger serves just as well as a sort of ad hoc utility implement, with which he can carve meat in the wild, or perform other minor tasks.

Longbow: Aedric's final weapon is a yew self-bow about 195 centimeters long when unstrung, with a draw weight of approximately 500 Newtons, allowing it to loose an arrow with an energy of approximately 170 Joules. While Aedric's skills are greater in swordplay, he remains a capable archer, being able to use the weapon effectively while defending a fortification, or, indeed, while hunting for food in the wild. The bow is not particularly heavy, weighing less than 300 grams.

Armor: Aedric's primary piece of armor is a mail hauberk fashioned from more than 25,000 rings of wrought iron, where each ring has an inner diameter of approximately 10 millimeters, and is constructed with wire around 1.5 milllimeters in diameter. The mail coat extends to the tops of Aedric's knees, with a split in both front and rear starting just below the groin to better allow the wearer to straddle a horse. Mail sleeves provide protection from Aedric's sleeves to his elbows, leaving his forearms uncovered. The hauberk weighs just shy over 12.3 kilograms, where a plate harness of steel or wrought iron might weigh between 20 and 25 kilograms. The weight of the hauberk is placed partly on Aedric's hips by the use of a belt, reducing user fatigue in the field. To prevent corrosion, the armor is typically stored in oil, and is greased with oil when worn, to prevent contact between moisture and the iron rings. To prevent chafing, Aedric typically wears a linen focale under the collar of his hauberk.

To provide added protection for his limbs, Aedric wears vambraces and greaves of splinted armor made from long, narrow strips (or splints) of material laid side-by-side and then riveted or sewn to one another against a leather backing. As one's legs are particularly vulnerable in battle, his greaves are constructed using splints of mild steel, of the same type one would see used for the most expensive plate harnesses, rather than the softer wrought iron used in less expensive armor due to the greater ease with which smiths can shape the metal. Each greave covers Aedric's calf and shin from knee to ankle, and weighs about 1 kilogram. In order to place the least possible weight on his arms, Aedric wears vambraces whose splints are constructed principally from leather that has been boiled in wax after being formed to add rigidity to the material. These hardened leather splints are further reinforced by thin strips of wrought iron sewn underneath the boiled leather splints, reaching a comfortable middle ground between protective value and lightness. Each vambrace covers his forearm from elbow to wrist, and weighs roughly 600 grams.

Underneath his mail, Aedric wears a padded jacket made of layers of linen fabric quilted together and stuffed with fabric scraps, forming a thin cushion underneath his armor, serving to absorb the impact of blows to Aedric's flexible mail while augmenting the hauberk's protective value. This jacket features full-length sleeves (over which Aedric wears his vambraces), and follows his hauberk in extending to his knees, featuring the same split beneath the groin.

Over his iron mail, Aedric wears a sleeveless, cream-white surcoat of padded linen, similar in construction to the jacket underneath. About 5 millimeters thick, this gambeson provides additional protection against cutting and piercing attacks for minimal additional weight. The surcoat ends just below the level of Aedric's belt, and the bottom fringe of the gambeson features several pteruges of flexible leather which extend most of the way down Aedric's thighs, helping to protect from cuts to his upper legs. Similar pteruges are sewn to the shoulders of the gambeson, protecting Aedric's upper arms.

Total Weight of Arms and Armor: About 17.65 kilograms

Pet: Aedric travels with a large wolf that he found in the woods as a pup and raised as his own. This wolf, dubbed "Dog," has developed an extremely close bond to his master, and will go so far as to defend the young man in battle. Winter is of a particular large breed of wolf native to the hills at the foot of the Snowpeak mountains, where the ridges meat Woodfall and the Lost Woods. At two years of age, Dog measures some 200cm in length and weighs roughly 75-80 kilograms, standing at a height of roughly 85 centimeters. Dog's coat is quite full, mostly of a light grey hue, and his eyes are a light, coppery brown.

Appearance: Aedric stands roughly 175 centimeters in height, weighing some 80 kilograms. An active, hard-working young man, he has a lean, built physique, maintained by hard hours spent working his fields, or working on swordplay in the training yard of his current station. Such sparring has left his arms, shoulders, and chest marked with the scars of many heavy blows by blunted steel swords.

His face remains young, if hardened, with a broad, tight jaw and a stern brow atop a pair of sharp, steel-blue eyes. His sculpted visage is textured with a relatively thin beard along his jaw, and framed by a mat of wavy, dark brown locks reaching down not quite to his shoulders, usually worn half-up to keep from blowing in his face.

During most of his time adventuring or otherwise in the field, if he is not wearing his armor, Aedric usually just wears the same gambeson normally kept under his mail hauberk. He does not tend to bother with more comfortable, more extravagant civilian clothing while in the field. While spending considerable time at home or in a town or other safe area, Aedric will tend to wear more decorated, civilian clothing, mostly long-sleeved, linen tunics laced up the front with leather cord.

In the field or while with his unit, Aedric will often wear a thick, dark blue, woolen cape reaching down to his lower calves and secured about his neck with a brooch of polished bronze.

Aedric wears his sword, Storm, on his left on a loop in the belt he wears over his hauberk and linen jack. His dagger, too, is worn on the left, secured to the belt behind Aedric's back. He keeps the dagger angled to the side to allow easy access with his left hand should he need to brandish the weapon if outnumbered in a fight. The rest of his belt is used to keep satchels and other miscellaneous pouches and tools during his travels.

Personality: Aedric is something of a polymath. Though a talented swordsman by most anyone's standards, Aedric's greatest strengths and passions lie in the study of military tactics and leadership, looking back to the histories and treatises of Hyrule's great heroes and military thinkers. As well, Aedric finds himself drawn to the maths and sciences; he is a capable student of engineering and mechanics. In this way, he is something of a warrior and a scholar, and, perhaps, had Ganon never cast his shadow over Hyrule, Aedric may well be finding himself walking a very different path in life.

As a soldier, Aedric is a passionate, energetic commander. He takes great care to push those under his command to greater heights, looking to inspire confidence and ferocity in his men while working hard to guarantee that those serving under him are as disciplined as possible. While seeing to his units, he often takes a personal role in administration the drilling of his men, sometimes leading exercises personally. On the field, he is known to be a capable organizer and an aggressive commander. Applying his knowledge of the sciences, Aedric takes a calculated, analytical approach to planning his movements and his positions. His operations tend to be characterized by bold moves, often seeking to identify the next target of value and striking as soon as possible and as effectively as possible. Boldness, however, does not equate to recklessness. Aedric is just as eager to employ subterfuge and raiding, skirmishing tactics as he is to rush in and meet the enemy face-to-face, and where there is no benefit to be found in going on the offensive, Aedric is known to be an unyielding defender just as much as an unrelenting attacker.

In terms of personal philosophy, he is a stoic. That is, Aedric places a high value on logic and rationalism above rash, purely emotional decision-making. In many cases, duty is held in higher regard than desire, and so Aedric may undertake roles that he does not have a want for out of a sense of obligation. In many respects, Aedric may not be a particularly good stoic. While he would like to be able to accept the present as it is, and reject his emotional instincts, he is no stranger to passion and rage. Pushed beyond his threshold for pain, frustration, fatigue, or grief, he may let his emotions get the better of him. This will rarely translate to true recklessness, risking physical harm, but Aedric's patience may give way to true anger.

Above all, Aedric displays a particular ambition. His ambition is not to build personal power or wealth for its own sake, but to rise above all obstacles in order to serve, as Aedric would see it, the memory of his father, who died trying to liberate Aedric and his mother from servitude under Ganon. As the only living member of his house, and with few memories of his family other than the honorable sacrifice of his father, Aedric is driven to serve that legacy as best as he is able. Of course, exactly how to serve that legacy is almost entirely uncertain, and this leaves Aedric with a sense that he must excel in just about every way that he can, to make the most of the free life his late father gave to him in his final days and weeks. Every new height that Aedric ascends to is therefore just another step along the way, and Aedric has not truly honored his father's legacy, as far as he is concerned, until he climbs higher or achieves even greater feats in his name.
